Introduction

Adolescence is a critical period of transition between childhood and

adulthood, characterized by rapid physical, cognitive, psychological,
and social changes. The main problems of adolescence can be
categorized into growth and development, school, childhood illnesses
that persist into adolescence, mental health disorders, and the
consequences of risky or illegal behaviors.

Growth and development issues are common during adolescence, as

adolescents experience significant physical changes due to puberty.
These changes include growth spurts, body odor, acne, and an increase
in body hair. Girls and adolescents assigned female at birth (AFAB)
develop breasts and start menstruating, while boys and adolescents
assigned male at birth (AMAB) experience changes in their genitals
and reproductive systems.

School problems are also prevalent during adolescence, as difficulties

in various aspects of life often manifest as school problems. These
issues include fear of going to school, absenteeism without permission
(truancy), dropping out, academic underachievement, and school
avoidance due to anxiety, depression, or social factors. School
problems can result from mental health disorders, family conflict,
inappropriate academic placement, learning disabilities, or mild
intellectual disabilities that were not recognized early in life.
Childhood illnesses that continue into adolescence can also pose
challenges. These illnesses may require ongoing management and can
impact an adolescent's daily life, social interactions, and overall well-
being.

Mental health disorders are more common during adolescence than

during childhood. These disorders include anxiety disorders, mood
disorders, and disruptive behavioral disorders. Adolescents with
anxiety or mood disorders may exhibit physical symptoms such as
fatigue, chronic fatigue, dizziness, headache, and abdominal or chest
pain. Depression is common among adolescents, and doctors actively
screen for it during examinations. Suicide is uncommon, but thoughts
about suicide (called suicidal ideation) are common, and adolescents
with suicidal ideation require an immediate mental health evaluation.
There are three main stages of adolescence, they are as
follows:

➢ Early adolescence (9-13 years) – characterized by a spurt of

growth and the development of secondary sexual characteristics.
➢ Mid adolescence(14-15 years) – this stage is distinguished by
the development of a separate identity from parents, of new
relationships with peer groups and the opposite sex, and of
experimentation.
➢ Late adolescence (16-19 years) – At this stage, adolescents have
fully developed physical characteristics (like adults), have formed
a distinct identity, and have well-formed opinions and ideas
(NCERT 1999).
Development Characteristics of young adolescence

Development characteristics of young adolescence include physical,

cognitive, social-emotional, and psychological development.

Physical development is marked by rapid growth and maturation,

including growth spurts, puberty, and neural change. Growth spurts
involve significant increases in height, weight, internal organ size, and
skeletal and muscular systems. Puberty, triggered by the release of
hormones, leads to the development of primary and secondary sexual
characteristics. Neural changes in the young adolescent brain are
remarkable, with significant changes within the brain during early
adolescence.

Cognitive development involves the ability to understand abstract

ideas, grasp higher math concepts, and develop moral philosophies.
Adolescents also establish and maintain satisfying relationships, move
toward a more mature sense of themselves and their purpose, and
question old values without losing their identity.

Social-emotional development is characterized by increased self-

awareness, sensitivity, and worries about body changes. Adolescents
may make painful comparisons about themselves with their peers and
go through awkward stages, both in their appearance and physical
coordination. Friends become more important as adolescents pull away
from their parents in a search for their own identity, leading to potential
conflicts within families.
Psychological development involves the establishment of sexual
identity, becoming comfortable with one's body and sexual feelings,
and learning to express and receive intimate or sexual advances.
Adolescents often have behaviors consistent with several myths of
adolescence, such as being self-centered and believing that negative
events will not happen to them.

These developmental characteristics are influenced by social and

institutional factors, including physical development, which has
Eurocentric roots. Adolescents may face specific risk factors associated
with bullying, homelessness, mental health, and nutrition that challenge
their overall health and well-being.
Major problem due to lack of awareness:
➢ Over 1.5 million adolescents and young adults aged 10–24 years
died in 2020, nearly 5000 every day.
➢ Young adolescents aged 10–14 years have the lowest risk of death
of all age groups.
➢ Injuries (including road traffic injuries and drowning), violence,
self-harm and maternal conditions are the leading causes of death
among adolescents and young adults
➢ Half of all mental health disorders in adulthood start by age 14,
but most cases are undetected and untreated.
➢ Early onset of substance use is associated with higher risks of
developing dependence and other problems during adult life, and
people of younger ages are disproportionately affected by
substance use compared with people of older ages.
Main health issues due to lack of concern:

o Injuries

o Violence

o Mental health

o Alcohol and drug use

o Tobacco use

o HIV/AIDS

o Other infectious diseases

o Nutrition and micronutrient deficiencies

Solutions

➢ General:

Every individual in the community that are dealing with adolescent

need to them understand very well, to help the adolescent to pass
through the tunnel successfully. Nurses, Doctors, and all community
health workers including social workers must educate parents and the
community on how to deal with the adolescent problem. Problem
adolescents are future generations and parents. Adolescents are the
future therefore it is very worthwhile to help them learn how to live
happy and healthy lives.

➢ To parents of adolescents:

Do not be too strict possessive or uninterested in dealing with their

children. Give adequate support in terms of finance and advice
otherwise, conflict occurs which can eventually lead to serious crises.
Start sex education right from home to the adolescent. Live decent and
other honest life so that your children will have confidence in you for
an adage says charity begins at home.
