WHY CAST IRON ?
Cast Iron Pipes and Fittings have been used to convey waste and water throughout the world since
centuries. Cast Iron Pipe installed at the fountains of Versailles in 1623 is still functioning today, is
the silent testimony of durability and performance. Cast Iron has proven its worth over the year in
demanding applications, a historical track record unmatched by substitute materials.
Today’s customers choose Hubless Cast Iron Pipes & Fittings because strength goes hand-in-hand
with ease of installation, fire resistance and low noise. Customers of past generations choose cast
iron for its strength and durability. Now, the modern Hubless Cast Iron Drainage System is
compatible with state-of-the-art building techniques. Cast iron has undergone changes that put it
at the top of the list for clients and customers. Hubless Cast Iron drainage systems installed
worldwide is still functioning flawlessly.
Hubless coupling joints has revolutionized cast iron drainage pipe installations from hazardous,
tedious, skilled craftsman trade, to a simpler, quicker, less tool needed safer occupation. The
invention of stainless steel couplings streamlined the Hubless drainage piping installation process
tremendously, and with just 10 minutes training period required. A 304 series Stainless Steel is
used for coupling because of its superior corrosion resistance. It is resistant to oxidation, warping
and deformation, offers rigidity under tension with a substantial tensile strength and yet provides
sufficient flexibility.
Rubber seals helps in reducing noise transmission, since center stop provides a positive
isolation break at every joint by preventing direct metal to metal contact between the two plain edge
of pipes and / or fittings. Rubbers value as an isolating material has long been recognized
by acoustical engineers. This type of rubber is widely used for engine mounts and pads under noise
producing machinery such as pumps, chillers - compressors, fans and other equipment.

Versatility:
Hassel free system, which can be used efficiently throughout, as per the requirement in adverse and
demanding conditions also.
Fire resistant:
Cast iron is noncombustible and hence does not contribute to the spreading of flames in case of fire.
Resistance to Abrasion:
High resistance to Sand, Gravel Glass particles, Garbage, Disposal residue, Dish water discharge and
Debris carried, both at low and high velocity.
SERVICEABILITY
Low co-efficient of Expansion & Compression:
Less expansion or contraction in any environment, so no space for leakage and smell.
Page | 6
Compact System:
Hubless Couplings provide more compact arrangement. The great advantage of this system is that it
permits joints to be made in limited access areas.
System Flexibility:
The couplings permits sufficient flexibility under adverse conditions, also allow pipe movement, building
sway movement without breakage or joint leakage.
Less Wastages:
Since pipes & fittings are Hubless, every inch of pipe can be utilized by making coupling joints.
Angular Deflection:
Coupling Joints allows deflection in piping up to 3 Deg.
Easy to Handle:
As compared to Hub Pipes these are light in weight & very easy to Handle
Hassel-free Installation:
Installation of Hubless Cast Iron Pipes & Fittings has no added complications like fire collars, cladding,
additional brackets, Sound insulation, Expansion Joints, Thermal limiters etc. unlike Plastic Pipes.

JOINTING PROCESS
The joint assembly consists of a specially designed Elastomeric Sleeve (Rubber gasket) which fits over
the end of the pipe or fitting and is clamped to the pipe or fitting with Stainless Steel (SS-304) Shielded
clamp.
ASSEMBLY:
1. Place the gasket on one end of pipe or fitting & the stainless steel
clamp & shield assembly on the other end of pipe or fitting
2. Firmly seat the pipe or fitting ends against the integrally molded
center stop inside the rubber gasket
3. Slide the stainless steel shield & clamp assembly over the rubber
gasket and tighten the bands. For larger diameters couplings which
have four bands, the inner bands should be tightened first and then
the outer bands.

UNDERGROUND INSTALLATION
The physical properties of cast iron soil pipe and fittings make cast iron an ideal drain, waste, and vent
material for underground installations. Two key elements for proper underground installations are trench
preparation and backfilling.
The trench should be wide enough for easy assembly of the joints. Total load on the pipe includes both
earth load and live load. Safety procedures and other laws applicable to trenching should be observed,
including provisions to avoid collapse of the trench wall.
Cast iron, being a rigid material, does not depend upon side fill for support. The trench bottom should be
stable enough to support the complete barrel of the pipe. If possible, the barrel of the pipe should rest on
even and undisturbed soil. Holes should be provided at each joint for each coupling to allow for continuous
support of the barrel along the trench bottom. If the ditch must be excavated deeper than the depth of the
drainage pipe, place and tamp backfill material to provide uniform support for the pipe barrel.
Many times in the installation of underground cast iron, it is necessary to make adjustments to the direction
of the drain line. Cast Iron Pipe and Rubber Gaskets will allow this through deflection in the joints.
Installation should initially be completed in a straight line and then deflected to the appropriate amount.
Maximum deflection should not exceed 12mm per 300mm of pipe length. This would allow 120mm of
deflection for a 3000mm of pipe length. For changes in direction greater than these deflections, an
appropriate fitting should be used.
Once the underground installation is completed, the section is ready for testing. NECO recommends
testing at 3000mm head of hydrostatic site test pressure (0.03 MPa). Since, the underground drainage
pipe is usually the largest diameter pipe, it is necessary to restrain the system or joints from movement at
changes in direction and end of runs prior to testing. This may be done by partially backfilling and leaving
the joints exposed for inspection.
Page | 16
After testing is completed, the trench can be properly backfilled. When backfilling, care should be taken
to protect the pipe from large rocks, stones, or frozen fill material that could damage the pipe. Cast iron
soil pipe laid on a solid trench bottom does not require special backfilling or procedures.
It should be properly assessed, observed, tested and determined before laying cast iron pipes
underground that, whether it requires polyethylene encasement because of corrosive nature of soil in
contact.
Installers should always consider local conditions, codes and engineers’ instructions for underground
installation.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURES & INSTRUCTIONS
1. Hubless pipe installed in horizontal position shall be supported at every coupling. The hanger
shall be placed within 450mm of the coupling (See Figure 1). Joints used for connecting Hubless
pipes posses sufficient shear strength to require one hanger per joint. For DN 200mm and above
Hubless Pipes, hanger shall be placed on both sides of the coupling when installing full 3000mm
length (See Figure 2).

4. Support terminal ends of all Horizontal runs / Branches and each change of direction or alignment
with an approved hanger.
5. P-Traps or closet bends installed should be firmly secured against movement in any direction
6. Horizontal pipes & fittings above DN 100 mm and larger shall be suitably braced to prevent
horizontal movement & to resist the thrust pressure. This shall be done at branch opening or
change of direction by use of braces, block or any other suitable method to prevent movement,
wherever required as per system design.
7. Adequate provision should be made to prevent shear, where components are suspended in excess
of 450mm by means of hangers, they should be suitably braced against horizontal movement
which is called sway bracing.

TESTING AND INSPECTION
Once the installation is completed, it is important to test and inspect all piping work for leaks.
Concealed work should remain uncovered until the required tests are made and approved at site.
When testing, the system should be properly restrained at all bends, changes of direction and the end
of runs.
There are various types of test procedures used for testing installed hubless cast iron pipes & fittings,
water or smoke test is recommended. Proper safety precautions, procedures and protective equipment
should be used during all testing procedures. It is suggested to consider the local conditions, codes,
manufacturers’ & engineers’ instructions.
WATER TEST
A water or hydrostatic test is the most common test used to inspect a completed cast iron soil pipe
installation. This is the recommended test in most plumbing codes. The purpose of the test is to locate
any leaks at the joints and correct these prior to the closing in of the piping or backfilling of the
underground piping. To isolate each floor or section being tested, test plugs are inserted through test
tees in the stacks. All other openings should be plugged or capped with test plugs or test caps. Prior
to the beginning of the test, all bends, changes of direction and ends of runs should be properly
restrained. During the test, thrust forces are exerted at these locations. Thrust is equal to the
hydrostatic pressure multiplied by area. Thrust pressure, if not restrained, will result in joint movement
or separation causing failure of the test.
Prior to testing, cap or plug all openings in the lower section of the section to be tested. Fill the system
to be tested with water at the highest point. As water fills a vertical cylinder or a vertical pipe it creates
hydrostatic pressure. The pressure increases as the height of the water in the vertical pipe increases.
NECO recommends 3000mm head of hydrostatic site test pressure (0.03 MPa). Filling the system
slowly should allow any air in the system to escape as the water rises in the vertical pipe. All air
entrapped in the system should be expelled prior to beginning of the test. Failure to remove entrapped
air may give faulty test results.
Once the stack is filled to 3000mm of head, a visual inspection of the section being tested should be
made to find any leaks. Where leaks are found in a hubless system in most cases hubless couplings
have not been torqued. Proper torqueing will probably correct the problem.
Fifteen minutes is suitable time for the water test. Once the system has been successfully tested it
should be drained and the next section should be prepared for testing.
Page | 22
SMOKE TEST
When a smoke test is required by engineers, architects, or plumbing codes, it is applied to all the parts
of the drainage and venting system after all fixtures have been permanently connected and all traps
filled with water. A thick, penetrating smoke produced by one or more smoke machines is introduced
into the system through a suitable opening.
As the smoke appears at the stack opening on the roof, the opening is closed off and the introduction
of smoke is continued until a pressure equal to one inch of water is built up and maintained for fifteen
minutes without the addition of more smoke. Under this pressure smoke should not be visible at any
point, connection or fixture. All windows in the building should be closed until the test is completed.
DANGER: Chemical mixtures for producing smoke may be dangerous and should not be used.
