1. Executive Summary
1.1 Introduction
This CAR seeks approval for €42.500,00 in Capex, to execute the modification of the Dock Doors’ firmware at TRN1,
Italy. Target go-live date is 11th Nov 22.
All TRN1 Dock Doors’ firmware will be modified to allow a new procedure take place for the opening and closing
phases, that will then be divided into 3 sub-phases, and that would prevent AAs to open the bay without having the
platform set. If done, a sound alarm and a flashing light will activate until the platform is set.

1.3 Benefits [@lmantica]
This project is mainly focused on Safety. In particular, the goal is to improve the safety of all AAs working at dock, both
from IB and OB.

BENEFITS
Safety Indoor Marshalls will be less likely to fall into the gap between the bay and the trailer.
Table 1
Actual procedures on both opening and closing phases of the dock doors expose the AAs to the risk of falling into the
gap that exists between the trailer and the FC. This can be driven by a machinery malfunction or by an omission of the
Indoor Marshall.

Durind the dock door’s opening phase, a risk exists of forgetting to insert platform into the trailer before starting to
load containers. With the actual procedure in fact the bay door is first opened completely, then the platform is set.
This leads to a period in which the bay is open and a space is present between the bay and the trailer, with the risk for
the IM to fall into it. On top of that, if the IM forgets to insert the platform, the risk is to get stuck with the PIT or the
Pedestrian Controlled Pallet Trucks, increasing the potential impact on the person. See Appendix 2.

During dock door’s closing phase, as per actual procedure, the IM first removes the platform and then closes the bay.
This leads to a period in which the bay is open and a space is present between the bay and the trailer, with the risk for
the IM to fall into it.

See Appendix 3 for A3 investigation of an incident occurred in TRN1 on 10/21/2021.

New procedure will have 3 main effects: (1) for opening phase, (2) in case the procedure is not followed and (3) for
closing phase:
1- The new procedure for the opening of the dock door is composed by different steps: 1- dock door is opened
only up to 1m from floor level. At the same time, an alarm sounds and a siren light flashes to inform that the
platform has not been set yet. 2- platform is inserted with the door still at 1m height. Once done, the alams
stop sounding and flashing. 3- dock door opening can be completed. See Appendix 4 for the opening
procedure.

2- If the dock door is opened completely before setting the platform (“by-passing” the first stop at 1m by pressing
again the opening button), the alarm will continue sounding and the light flashing until the platform is set. See
Appendix 5.
3- The new procedure for the closing of the dock door is composed by different steps: 1- dock door is closed only
until 1m from floor level. 2- platform is removed. At this time an alarm sounds and a siren light flashes to
inform that the platform has been removed. 3- dock door closure is completed. See Appendix 6 for the closing
procedure.

4. Alternatives [@lmantica]
As per the researches done among several FCs, TRN1 would be the first one to implement this feature at IT level. On EU
level, only RMU1 conducted a parallel pilot project. The only alternative to this project is the current situation with the
procedure that exposes the AAs to the safety risks mentioned in the paragraphs above.
Performing a dive deep with RME Team team, the best option suitable to the current TRN1 need is the one proposed
by ASSA ABLOY. The reason behind having only one Vendor available is that softwares and firmwares of all TRN1 dock
doors have been installed by them, are owned by them and can’t be modified by others. The price includes material
and manpower to install the feature on all dock doors (58 in total). The cost for a single bay is €738, leading to a total
cost of €42.804. The quotation can be found in the attached file below:
