4.1 Preliminary Activities (5 minutes)

4.1.1 Greetings
Good morning, class. How are you Good morning, Teacher! I’m fine,
today? thank you. How about you?

I’m good also, Class. Thank you.

4.1.2 Prayer Are you ready to pray classmates?

Can someone in the class lead the Yes, we are. In the name of the father,
prayer? Yes, Rhian, go ahead. the son, the holy spirit, Amen.

Lord, bless each and every student

here, as well as our teacher, as we
embark on another day of learning.
Please give us clear minds and open
hearts so we can grasp the knowledge
and lessons set before us. Help us to
be attentive, and let Your wisdom
guide us in our studies, Amen.

4.1.3 Checking of Attendance

Let’s check your attendance, class.
Say present if your name is called. Yes, Teacher!

4.1.4 Review

Class, based on our lesson last

meeting, who can remember what is a
fraction? It represent a portion of something,
Teacher
Yes, Andre?

That’s correct!

Who can give me examples of

fractions? Raise your hands if you
want to answer, class.

Yes, Jane?
Correct. What else? Yes, Gerald? 5/6, Teacher!
Very good! Another one? Yes, Marie? 4/7, Teacher!
Good answer, Marie! Last one? Yes, 3 5/8, Teacher!
Veronica? 4 1/2, Teacher!

Very impressive, Section Gold!

Now, who can tell me what is the

numerator and denominator of a
fraction?

Yes, Matheia? Teacher, numerator is the number

above the line of a fraction.

Very good! How about the

denominator?

Yes, Ileen? The denominator is the number below

the numerator, Teacher.
That’s correct!

This time around, in 3 minutes, I want

you to get a 1 whole sheet of paper
and solve the given fraction Okay, teacher!

Time is up! Let’s try to check your

answers, class. Who wants to write
their answer to the front?

Yes, I can see the hands of Dave.

Please write it on the board. This is my answer, Teacher.

That’s very impressive, Dave! That is

the correct answer. Thank you, Teacher.

Can you explain your strategies for Yes, Teacher. So the given is 1 1/2 +
solving the given fraction? 2 3/2. I used the easiest strategy and
it goes like this, I multiplied the
denominator to the whole number
which is 1 and then added the
numerator. I just copied the
denominator and that goes for the
divisor. And then simply add the
numerators together and copy the
denominator. And that is my strategy,
Teacher.

That was an amazing explanation,

Dave! Let’s give him a Very Good 1,2,3 Very Good
Clap! 1,2,3 Very Good
1,2,3 Very Good (3x)
4.2 Activity (15 minutes) Guess
What???

Class, our topic for today is all about

adding mixed fractions.

A mixed fraction is a combination of a

whole number and a proper fraction.
For example, 4 5/2 is a mixed fraction,
where 4 is the whole number and 5/2
is the proper fraction.

To add mixed fractions, we follow

these steps:

Step 1: Add the whole numbers

together.
Step 2: Add the fractions together.

Example:
Let's add the mixed fractions 3 2/5
and 2 3/4.

Step 1: Add the whole numbers: 3 + 2

= 5.
Step 2: Add the fractions:
The denominators are 5 and 4. To add
fractions with different denominators,
we need to find a common
denominator.

The common denominator for 5 and 4

is 20.

Convert both fractions to have a

denominator of 20:

2/5 becomes 8/20 (multiplied 4 to

numerator and denominator)

3/4 becomes 15/20 (multiplied 5 to

numerator and denominator)
Now, add the fractions: 8/20 + 15/20 =
23/20.

So, the sum of 3 2/5 and 2 3/4 is 5

3/20.

Do you understand?

Okay, who can give me another

example of a fraction with a whole Yes, Teacher!
number?

Yes, Anthony?

That’s correct! Another example. Yes, 4 2/1, Teacher.

Catherine?

Very good! 6 4/2, Teacher.

What else? Yes, Henry?

Correct! 5 3/4, Teacher.

4.3 Analysis (15 minutes) “Answer

This Please”

Are you ready, Section Gold?

Yes, we are!
That’s good!

To add mixed fractions, we need to

multiply the denominator to the whole
number and then add the numerator.

For example:

Then, copy the denominator. So the

total is 23/4.
If the sum of the numerators is greater
than the denominator, you will need to
simplify it by dividing the numerator
and denominator and reducing the
fraction if possible.

Do you understand?
Yes, Teacher!

Now, I will divide the class by row.

Each row will have to solve the given
solutions and the row that has the
most correct answers will be given a
surprise box from me!
And also, you will be given 7 minutes
to answer the following. Are you
ready, class? Write it on a 1 whole
sheet of paper.

The clock is ticking class.

Very good! The 2nd row is done! As

well as Row 3! Now for the last one,
Row 1.
Do you understand now, class?
Yes, Teacher!
That’s good!

4.4 Abstraction (10 minutes)

Let’s find the sum of this fraction.

Class, if you will encounter this one

wherein you need to solve a whole
number to the mixed fractions, just
remember that in the whole number,
you just simply put 1 in the
denominator.

Do you understand?
Yes, Teacher!
Okay, another example.

Class, if you will encounter this

equation above in the future wherein
after you solved both of the mixed
fractions, you need to cross multiply it
and copy the biggest number
(denominator) just like this one below
and then after, simply add the
fractions together.

Now, let’s try to add two mixed

fractions.

Let’s solve another example.

Wow, you already did great simplifying

the mixed fractions class! Keep it up!

4.5 Application (15 minutes)

Partner Activity!

For our next activity, I want you to pair

you up with your seatmates and solve
the mixed fractions together. You need
to take turns solving. I will give you 10
minutes to answer the following.

1. A recipe calls for 2 1/2 cups of

flour and 1 3/4 cups of sugar.
How much flour and sugar are
needed in total?
2. If a character walks 1 2/3
miles in the morning and 3 1/4
miles in the afternoon, what is
the total distance walked?

V. Evaluation (10 minutes)

Direction: Convert the mixed fractions

to improper fractions.

1. 7 2/6 =
2. 2 3/2 =
3. 5 3/4 =
4. 3 4/2 =
5. 2 4/1 =

VI. Assignment (3 minutes)

Direction: In your assignment
notebook, copy and answer the
following.

1. What is a mixed fraction?

2. What are the steps to add
mixed fractions?
3. Find the sum of 2 1/3 and 1
2/5.
4. How do you find a common
denominator when adding
fractions?
5. Calculate the sum: 4 3/8 + 2
5/6.
