Crochet Rubber Ducky, adapted from Mabel Chicken pattern

The increases/decreases are strange in order to create the proper proportions

and NOT be top-heavy & fall forward. I started out making the rows more even,
but it didn’t look right, and it couldn’t sit upright without falling over.

They can be made with a magnet on the inside (for “ducking Jeeps”) but it has
to be a strong magnet and made with SUPER FINE- LIGHT (1-3 weight) yarn
(such as Hobbii Rainbow 8/4) or other brands but no heavier/thicker than a
thin 3- or it will be too big/heavy and thick for the magnet to work.
If you want a bigger duck to be magnetic, you might have to just glue a magnet
to the outside.
I use a 1-inch round ceramic magnet (found mine at Hobby Lobby).
The pattern starts out similar to the Mabel Chicken pattern but then it gets
adjusted to add the ducky head, working from the bottom up.

Row 1: Magic circle with 8 sc (8)

Row 2: inc x 8 (16)
Row 3: (sc, inc) x 8 (24)
Row 4: (2 sc, inc) x 8 (32)
Row 5: (3 sc, inc) x 8 (40)
Row 6: BLO sc around (40)
Row 7- 12 (6 rounds): sc around (40)
Row 13: (3 sc, dec) x 8 (32)
Row 14: 11 sc, dec, sc, dec x 2, sc, dec, 11 sc, ch3, sl st into last stitch (starts
the tail)
Row 15: Sl st into first st, ch4, sl st into same st, sl st into second st, ch3, sl st
into same st. (this makes the tail). Fold the opening in half and sl st x 5 pairs-
using the outer loops from each side of the flattened opening. This should
leave 16 st left open for the neck.
Insert magnet here, if you are putting one in.
Continue row 15 with the neck -and move the stitch marker to the first stitch
for the head.
Neck: 3 sc, inc, 2 sc, inc x 3, 2 sc, inc, 4 sc (21)
(I count the neck as part of row 15) Stuff body.
Row 16: 3 sc, inc, (2 sc, inc) x 4, 3 sc, inc, sc (27)
Row 17: 4 sc, inc, 16 sc, inc, 4 sc, inc (30)
Row 18-21: sc around (30)
Row 22: (4 sc, dec) x 5 (25)
Insert eyes between rows 19/20 but don’t put the backs on yet. Find a spot
between the eyes for the beak:
Look for a space where you can map out holes in this pattern C
*
* * *
D B A
To make the beak, use a yellow or orange and sl st the yarn
on using holes A & B. Turn the duck (head to your left) and using
the holes B & C, hdc, dc, hdc. Then using the holes B & D, sl st to
close the left side of the beak. FO and draw the ends into the head
and tie off.
Once the beak is done- reposition the eyes to where you want
them and attach the backs. I use 6 mm eyes for the small
magnetic duck, and up to 10 mm for a bigger duck made with
worsted yarn.
Row 23: (3 sc, dec) x5 (20) Start stuffing head
Row 24: (sc, dec) x 2, 2 sc, dec, sc, dec, 2sc, dec, sc, dec (14)
Row 25: dec x 7, finish stuffing head, FO and close opening
