73-20: CONTROLLING
1. General
This section describes that portion of the engine fuel system which is used to control and meter
fuel to the engine. This includes the Full Authority Digital Electronic Control (FADEC) system and
the fuel flow meter.
A. FADEC System
Engine control is maintained through a dual channel Engine Control Unit (ECU). The ECU,
installed in the RH baggage compartment, provides engine data via ARINC 429 to the
aircraft.
The ECU consists of a single electronic box, containing two identical engine control units
(Channel A and Channel B) for one engine. N1, N2, and ITT are transmitted from the FADEC
via the ARINC 429 data stream for primary engine displays. Total pressure and temperature
data from the aircraft data system are communicated to the FADEC via ARINC 429 for fault
accommodation.
The aircraft supplies power, thrust lever position, and numerous discrete inputs to define
the state or condition of the aircraft to the FADEC. The FADEC provides a series of discrete
outputs to the aircraft to provide control system and engine operating status.
The FADEC system is comprised of an engine gearbox mounted fuel control unit (FCU), the
engine control unit (ECU), and engine sensors.
• Fuel Control Unit (FCU)
The FCU is engine gearbox mounted and provides four functions: fuel conditioning,
fuel metering, inducer bleed valve actuation and FADEC system power generation.
For information regarding FCU maintenance, see Williams FJ33-5A Line Maintenance
Manual. (Refer to 5-00)
For information regarding fuel conditioning and metering functions, see Fuel. (Refer
to 28-00)
• Engine Control Unit (ECU)
The ECU consists of two identical channels with the cross channel input/output (I/O)
interface necessary to provide complete redundancy and transparent transition from
one channel to the other. Power, communications, and engine control are passed into
and out of the ECU through a series of D sub-miniature connectors.

• Sensors
The engine sensors required for FADEC system operation include a dual coil magnetic
N1 speed pickup, a dual coil magnetic N2 speed pickup, an ITT thermocouple
assembly, a dual element Pt2 sensor, and an aircraft inlet mounted dual element Tt2
sensor.
For more information regarding the Tt2 and Pt2 sensors, see Engine Indicating. (Refer
to 77-00)
In the FADEC system, one ECU channel is in control of the engine and is designated the
active channel. The other channel monitors engine and active channel operation and is
designated the standby channel. The FADEC system alternates which channel is active
between every start (at engine shutdown). When there are failures in the system, the FADEC
system automatically determines which channel is healthiest and capable of engine
control.
Primary control of the engine is accomplished by variation of the fuel flow. The FADEC
system provides automatic control of engine power setting, transient control, and start
sequencing. The FADEC system provides fuel valve position control to modulate fuel flow,
control of the solenoid fuel shut-off valve, and control of the inducer bleed valve state, all
integral to the FCU.
28 VDC for FADEC system operation is supplied through the 5-amp FADEC A circuit breaker
on ESS A2 and the 5-amp FADEC B circuit breaker on MAIN A1. The 1-amp FADEC PANEL
circuit breaker on MAIN A1 powers the fault lights.
The fuel flow meter is installed into the FCU-to-engine manifold fuel line assembly located
at the 5 o'clock position.
The fuel flow meter sends a fuel flow rate signal to the GEA 71 engine airframe unit. The
engine airframe unit decodes the sensor information and transmits the data to the PFD and
MFD.
Fuel flow is displayed on the EIS and Engine and Fuel synoptic pages along a calibrated
vertical bar and digital readout. The indicator sweeps a scale marked from 0 to 190 Gal/Hr
without display increments.
28 VDC for the digital instrument operation is supplied through the 1-amp GEA circuit
breaker on EMER FC1.
For maintenance practices pertaining to fuel flow indication, see Integrated Engine Instru-
ment Systems section of Engine Indicating. (Refer to 77-40)

2. Maintenance Practices
A. FADEC System
(a) Perform FADEC Fault Detection and Isolation in accordance with the manufac-
turer's approved Instructions For Continued Airworthiness. (Refer to 5-00)
(b) If TLD fault is found during 300-hour or annual inspection, fault must be repaired
and fault cleared before dispatch in accordance with the manufacturer's
approved Instructions For Continued Airworthiness. (Refer to 5-00)
(c) If TLD fault is detected between regularly scheduled inspections, determine
additional time to repair fault using the following equation:
Z≤X-Y
where
Z = Additional Time To Repair Faults
• CAUTION •
Additional Time to Repair Faults found at inspection, Z, must
not exceed 120 calendar days.
X = Inspection/Repair Interval
Y = Time Since Last TLD Fault-Free Condition
1 Determine Z.
Example:
• An operator has cause to check on the TLD status of the control, finds
TLD faults, and it has been 270 hours since the last TLD fault-free
condition. Based on the equation:
Z ≤ 300 - 270
Z ≤ 30
the operator must repair system within 30 hours of operation or
within 120 days, whichever occurs first.
2 Fault must be repaired and fault cleared within time limit Z in accordance
with the manufacturer's approved Instructions For Continued Airworthi-
ness. (Refer to 5-00)
