One (1) spiritual component to imbue the item with mystic endurance
Arcanum
Arcanum is the arcane power that suffuses the world. It can be found in nature, magical
objects, spiritual phenomena and—most commonly—in the souls of sentient creatures and
magical beasts. This force manifests as swirling motes of colored light, easily harvested by a
spirit vacuum or placed into another receptacle. Most people in Azlas Vrayne are aware of how
to transfer their Arcanum to others, but to do so bears a great risk for those who do: 1d4 psychic
damage for every cord of Arcanum transfered. Most people are born into their Arcanum,
receiving it from their parents. Others obtain it from communing with nature, consorting with
powerful fey or creatures from the Otherness, murdering people, or simply searching for stray
Arcanum like any other treasure. Arcanum is a valuable resource, and it is 100% necessary for
There are several types of Arcanum, each based on where the energy was housed. Most
of this was due to the Dragon Witches’ ingenious research into refining and perfecting
Arcanum’s capabilities, and in time, each would pass her own brand of the Substance on. All
Arcanum found within humanoids is the inherently draconic Arcanum. It is presumed this is the
substance’s first form, but actually, no one knows which Arcanum type was the original. Bright
Arcanum, similar to that found in celestials, is what suffuses the Core at the centre of Azlas
Vrayne, but it is not known if this is the purest Arcanum existent in the Otherness. Regardless,
the types of Arcanum, and the effects they bestow on one’s magic items, are as follows:
Black Arcanum is the creation of the Black Witch and is found within black dragons,
their ilk and the humanoids that have since inherited it. It manifests as a simple black
Blaze Arcanum is found within creatures of elemental fire and in places where fire is the
most common element, especially the Elemental Plane of Fire. It resembles a small
firebrand and allows crafters to put the power of fire into their magic.
Bleak Arcanum is a twisted form of the substance that inhabits the souls of all undead
creatures; indeed, the very process for becoming undead in Azlas Vrayne involves
transmuting one’s natural Arcanum into Bleak. This substance resembles a deep purple
inkblot that fades away to nothing if not harvested quickly enough. Bleak Arcanum
Blue Arcanum is found in blue dragons and various humanoid creatures. It looks like
Black Arcanum except it’s blue (follow the pattern for all other colored Arcanum). As
would be expected, it allows for the inclusion of lightning in the crafting process.
Brass Arcanum comes from the Brass Witch, brass dragons, and various humanoids who
beatific places in the Otherness. It was the first Arcanum to enter Azlas Vrayne and
Copper Arcanum rests within Copper Dragons and the humanoids they intermingled
with. Crafters use it to put the power of sloth into their items.
Dark Arcanum is found within the twisted forms of fiends and their homelands in the
Otherness. Unlike other Arcanum, it crystalizes into an ebony shard. Dark Arcanum is
typically used to open gates to the Otherness and commune with creatures there.
Deep Arcanum is a beige-colored sandy mass found in the souls of creatures of Elemental
Earth or their associated environs. It can be used to create items as strong as stone, or that
gray in color and tends to drift lazily around when outside of a container. It can reinforce
Fused Arcanum is found within creatures that are hybridizations of some sort (e.g.
lamias, centaurs, hippogriffs, etc.) Most of these creatures were the result of puramantic
experimentation on the Anvil of Dreams and have two types of Arcanum melded
together. It is not found in the wild, but it is highly valued for its great power and
to tell what Gel Arcanum looks like because it often takes on the color and consistency of
its host. Its malleability makes it perfect for items that change shape or form.
Gold Arcanum reverberates in the hearts of gold dragons and their ilk. It can add a deadly
Grand Arcanum rests in the souls of true giants and the giants descended from Rindr. It is
quite large (about the size of a bonfire) and undulates colors indefinitely. Grand Arcanum
Green Arcanum comes from green dragons, their descendants and all humanoids who’ve
been blessed with it. You can put poison in your items with it.
Ley Arcanum rests within the fey folk and their hidden redoubts. It’s bright green in color
and bounces up and down spryly. It can be used for influencing the hearts of others.
Red Arcanum takes its name from the similarly named dragons it comes from, but it also
can be found within random humanoids. It imparts the very spirit of the dragon on its
item, leading to artifacts that can increase a character’s ability scores or luck.
Root Arcanum is housed in plants and plant creatures, and like its name implies, it
resembles a small root system made of translucent white light. It invokes the power of
Silver Arcanum lies within silver dragons and those they’ve passed their gifting to. Its
Weird Arcanum is oddly goopier than most other Arcanum and comes in shades of sickly
blue, purple and green. It can often be found within aberrations or their ancient dwelling
places. Its power is chaotic and varied and often bears interesting consequences.
Wet Arcanum belongs to creatures of Elemental Water and the watery places of the world
and the Otherness. It resembles a small glob of water. Its uses vary, but it is most often
White Arcanum originated within white dragons and their descendants, but now many
humanoids bear this Arcanum within themselves. It can be used to add the power of cold
to items.
Wild Arcanum is typically found within unintelligent magical creatures, awakened beasts
or the like, though it may also be found within natural sites of arcane power, such as ley
lines, waterfalls, crystal formations and the like. It sits lower to the ground and is often
brunneous in color. It usually imparts some power from the beast or location from which
Wind Arcanum represents the magic of Elemental Air and all the creatures and places
associated with it. It’s invisible but moves quickly, just like its name implies. It adds

Organic Components
Organic components comprise any material to be mixed into the base item’s original material.
It’s pretty straightforward. There are 6 types: Alloy, Flesh, Fluid, Gas, Plant and Totem. These
direct how the energy will manifest. If an alloy is used in the creation process, the energies will
typically remain attached to the object no matter what the circumstances. If flesh is used, the
energy tends to lance out in beams. Fluid causes items to be able to. A gas will often allow the
item’s user to affect a large area. Plants typically allow for a natural “warping” of the object’s
powers, and a totem (a physical item of great significance to a creature, culture or natural locale)
allows one to imbue the item with the essence of its owner.
