D. Abstraction
And now, to check if you really
understand the story, I will call out
random students to answer my
question. So please listen and be
attentive.

1. How was Baldo’s first meeting with

Maria? What are his first
impressions on/about her?
*Baldo was mesmerized to the
physical appearance of Maria. He
even described her at the beginning
and ending part of the story as he
stated “She was tall and lovely and
the fragrance of her was like a
morning when papayas are in
bloom”
2. Why was it’s important to Noel to
introduce Maria to his family?
*For them to know Maria more.
3. Describe Noel/Leon in the story.
What was his situation? Explain the
reasons for his decision and cite the
possible consequences he’ll face
for what he did.
*Noel is a responsible, gentle and
loving husband. He was sent to
Manila to study but later on went
back home together with his wife.
He was in love and wants to stand
to his decision to stop his study and
focus to his family.
He may face difficulties on giving
financial support to his family
because he wasn’t able to finish his
study and will get hard time to get a
job.
4. Why did the father treat Maria like
he did? Do you agree with it? If not,
how would you want him to treat
Maria?
*He wanted to test Maria if he really
loves Noel and could live in the
Barrio because she’s from big city.
5. What is/are the theme of the story?
* Giving of importance to the
reputation of women.
* Entering a relationship is not easy
thing it requires many aspects to
consider. So it is better to plan for it
rather than rush things.
*Acceptance and sacrifice means
risking everything for the one you
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENTS’ ACTIVITY
love despite your differences in
status, belief, and orientations in life
6. Cite the values that the characters
displayed in the story. How will you
reflect it in your life?
*Noel- taking responsible to his
actions
*Maria- stand to his feeling to Noel
and it doesn’t change despite of the
big difference of environment she
was used to.
*Baldo- obedient boy.
*Father- still cared to his son
despite of what his son did.
7. Does the story is/still relevant
today? Support your answer.
*Yes. We could hear stories or
situations like this to people
nowadays.
(Answers may vary)
8. What are the feelings and attitude
of Manuel E. Arguilla toward the
story? How did he give importance
to the setting of the story?
*As you read the story, you could
tell how Arguilla really loves his
hometown. He detailed or
specifically describes the town and
gave significance of it.
9. What have you observed in the
opening and closing
sentences/paragraph of the story?
Do you think the writer done this
with purpose? Why?
*The opening and closing
paragraph was describing Maria.
These conclude that the story was
about Maria, not Leon.
10. What can you say about the plot of
the story? Is there hanging part of
it? What do you think is the purpose
of the writer in doing this?
*Hanging. There is no ending.
Arguilla wanted to let the readers
imagine or make their own ending
to the story.
11. How would you feel if your
brother/sister comes home with
wife/husband from a city and you
are from rural area? If he/she’s from
rural area and you and your family
