The Past Perfect Tense (thì quá khứ hoàn thành)

a. diễn tả một hành động xảy ra trước một thời điểm trong quá khứ

b. diễn tả một hành động xảy ra và hoàn thành trước một hành động khác trong quá khứ
(before, after, by the time, as soon as).

c. trong cấu trúc it was the first/second…time that + mệnh đề (quá khứ hoàn thành)

The Past Simple Tense (quá khứ đơn)

a. diễn tả một hành động xảy ra trong quá khứ và thường đi kèm với các trạng từ: yesterday,
ago, last……, in the past, in 1990

b. diễn tả một loạt hành động xảy ra liên tiếp trong quá khứ

ex:
