a. Pre-instructional, Assessment, and Follow-Through Activities

PRE-INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES

Motivation:

Attention: I will start by getting their attention with a short video or pictures of a beautiful
garden that showcases the benefits of gardening. I'll use colorful images and videos that
illustrate how gardening can improve the environment and mental health.

2
CUIN 7390: Instructional Design University of Houston

Relevance: I will say “I wonder how exciting it is that the school will have a garden now?”
Mention how it can be rewarding for both them AND their families. They can help their
families build and plant their own gardens at home based on what they learn at school.

Confidence: I will help build student confidence by assuring them that gardening is a fun and
accessible activity that anyone can learn. I will share my success with gardening and how I am
able to garden in a tiny backyard and with zero starting experience.

Satisfaction: I will allow students to share their own ideas for what they would like to plant in
our school garden after the lesson and any other gardening experience they've had!

Objectives:
I will turn objectives into statements that students can preview before each step of the way!

Objective 1: I will sign into Clever and click on the “gardening in Zone 9 in August” link using a
computer or tablet provided by the school in the classroom within 2 minutes of being asked
to access the link.

Objective 2: I will interact with the photo “Zone 9 in August characteristics" and categorize
the 5 plants that do well and 5 plants that do not do well in Zone 9 in August heat and
humidity into a t-chart given to me by my teacher, after interactive with the photo.

Objective 3: I will interact with the photo “Zone 9 in August characteristics: soil conditions"
and categorize the 5 plants that do well and 5 plants that do not do well in Zone 9 in August
soil conditions into a t-chart given to me by my teacher, after interactive with the photo.

Objective 4: I will interact with the photo “Zone 9 in August characteristics: rain conditions"
and categorize the 5 plants that do well and 5 plants that do not do well in Zone 9 in August
rain conditions into a t-chart given to me by my teacher, after interactive with the photo.
Objective 5: I will interact with the photo “Zone 9 in August characteristics: pests in Zone 9 in
August'' and categorize the 5 plants that do well and 5 plants that do not do well amongst
pests in Zone 9 in August into a t-chart given to me by my teacher, after interactive with the
photo.

Objective 6: I will correctly categorize plants into “to plant” and “not to plant” by selecting
TRUE OR FALSE IN in an interactive quiz assigned by my teacher on my computer, after
watching the full Zone 9 in August video.

Objective 7: I will circle the plants I incorrectly categorized in the quiz and confirm I
categorized the plants correctly in the t-chart given to me by my teacher if my answers do not

match.

Objective 8: I will choose 4 suitable plants to plant in august

Entry Skills:
I expect students to be able to sign into clever and find the link I am asking them to click on. I
also expect them to be able to use their pencil to fill out the t-chart as they are going along.

Student Groupings and Media Selection:

Students will be using their own computers to watch and complete each objective. They will
be clicking through different icons to read and look at pictures that will help them learn each
objective. They will also use interactive quizzes and online gardening tutorials.

ASSESSMENT

Pretest: I will set a timer on the board for 2 minutes to make sure everyone can successfully
access the link in clever.

Practice Tests:

Students will complete the interactive quiz after watching the full Zone 9 in August video and
filling out their t-chart in order to test their understanding of the content covered in the
tutorial. Each quiz will be designed to include questions related to each objective mentioned
earlier, specifically objectives 2-5

Posttest:

I will use the teacher checklist which will help determine if the
student has performed the task correctly or not.

Student Groupings and Media Selection:

Students will complete everything individually through t-charts given to them by me or the
interactive quizzes that will give them a score at the end of the tutorial.

FOLLOW-THROUGH ACTIVITIES

Memory Aids: To help the students remember the plants that are suitable for this climate, I'll
provide them with t-charts as memory aids. Also, in order to ensure they can apply what
they've learned, I'll have them check their quiz answers and make corrections as needed.

4
CUIN 7390: Instructional Design University of Houston

Transfer: Students can apply what they've learned while taking the quizzes and then I'll have
them check their quiz answers and make corrections as needed.

Student Groupings and Media Selection:

During the class, students will have the opportunity to work independently, but I will also
encourage them to interact with each other to help build their confidence. They will watch a
video, use their t-charts and complete interactive quizzes. They will also use the interactive
tutorials.
