A. Introduction 60 minutes Workplace Health and Safety are important factors in any sewing
Panimula industry either in hand sewing, using a sewing machine or even both an
electrical and a manual sewing machine. Employees/individuals encounter
several risk factors, such as awkward arm, neck, trunk, leg postures and back
pains. Safety measures have to be taken seriously especially when sharp
pointed objects are used such as scissors, tacking pins, needles, and other
equipment.
Sewing involves lots of opportunities for injury. Some of these are
obvious, but some are less so. Sewers can injure their bodies in almost
imperceptible ways. Taking basic precautions will reduce the risk of injury in
the sewing room. Therefore, there is a need for you to identify the different
types of hazards and risk in the workplace.

A hazard is any source of potential damage, harm or adverse health

effects on something or someone under certain conditions at work.
Risk is the chance or probability that a person will be harmed or
experience an adverse health effect if exposed to a hazard. It may also
apply to situations with property or equipment loss.

Types of Hazards
1. Chemical Hazard. Chemical hazard is any substance that can cause
harm, especially to humans. Chemicals of all forms are kept in our
homes and can result in significant harm if not properly treated.
2. Electrical Hazard. An electrical hazard can be identified as an unsafe
situation in which a worker may have electrical contact with an
energized device or conductor, and in which an individual may have
a shock injury; and/or there is a risk for a worker to have an arc flash,
thermal burn, or blast burn.
3. Ergonomic Hazard. Physical disorders can pose a risk of injury to the
musculoskeletal system, such as the lower back muscles or ligaments,
tendons or nerves of the hands or wrists, or bones around the knees,
resulting in musculoskeletal disorder.
4. Psychosocial Hazard. Psychosocial hazard has recently been
recognized as a hazard to the workplace in regulations. This form of
threat applies to mental health and behavioral conditions.
5. Radiation Hazard. Radiation Danger (RADHAZ) identifies the risks of
electromagnetic radiation to food, electrical devices, laws and
workers.
6. Biological Hazard. A biological danger or biohazard is something that
emerges from living organisms (e.g. pollen, fungi, plants, mosquitoes,
bacteria and viruses) that may pose a danger to someone's health.
7. Physical Hazard. Physical hazards are those substances which
threaten your physical safety. The most common types of physical
hazards are:
* Fire * Explosion * Chemical Reactivity

activities include:

• Holding the wrist in awkward position while cutting with scissors cause
injury to the wrist.
• Finger injuries while sewing.
• Low back injury from poor posture.
• Eye strain from poor lighting.
• Back injury from improper lifting procedures
B. Development 60 minutes Learning Task 1: “Spot the Hazard at Work”

number in the circles which best describe the wrong practices then link it
with its likely consequence. Write your answer in your answer sheet.
