LEWIS ELECTRON DOT
STRUCTURES
• Known as Electron Dot Structures
• Diagrams that describe the
• Chemical bonding between atoms in
molecule
• Display the total number of lone pairs
(unpaired electrons) present in each of
the atom
• Gilbert Newton Lewis suggested that
chemical bond is a pair of electrons that
is shared by 2 atoms.
REMEMBER!

• Symbol and 1 dot for each valence

electron in an atom
• Dots are placed on the four sides of the
symbols (top, bottom, left, & right)
• Each side can accommodate up to 2 e-
• Can’t write simple LEDS for transition
metals, lanthanides, and actinides
because they have incompletely filled
inner shells.

HOW TO WRITE LEWIS ELECTRON
DOT STRUCTURES
Step 1: Determine the total number of
valence electron.
Step 2: Identify the central atom. ( Only one
of, Least electronegative atom, H and
Halogen are terminal)
Step 3: Draw single bonds to the central
atom.
Step 4: Put remaining v e- on atom as lone
pairs.
Step 5: Turn lone pairs into double or triple
bonds to give every atom an octet or duet

WATER (H2O)
Step 1: Determine the total number of
valence electron.
H = 1 X 2 = 2 ve-
O = 6 X 1 = 6 ve-
TOTAL = 8 ve-

Step 2: Identify the central atom.

ACETYLENE (C2H2)
Step 1: Determine the total number of
valence electron.
C = 4 X 2 = 8 ve-
H = 1 X 2 = 2 ve-
TOTAL = 10 ve-
