ENGINE SESSION 3

DECK SESSION 3
PART I SHIP LABORATORY

The procedure in navigating a ship can be broken down into the following steps:

1. Preparation:
o Check the navigational equipment: This includes the ship's GPS, radar,
ECDIS (electronic charting and display system), and other navigational
instruments. Make sure that all of the equipment is in good working order
and that you are familiar with how to use it.
o Review the passage plan: The passage plan is a document that outlines the
route that the ship will take from its current position to its destination. It
includes information such as the planned speed, course, and navigational
hazards.
o Assess the weather conditions: Be aware of the current weather conditions
and any potential hazards, such as storms or fog.
2. Navigation:
o Monitor the ship's position: Use the ship's navigational equipment to track
the ship's position on the chart.
o Make course corrections: As needed, make course corrections to stay on
track.
o Be aware of other vessels: Keep a proper lookout for other vessels in the
area and be prepared to take evasive action if necessary.
3. Communication:
o Communicate with other vessels: Keep in contact with other vessels in the
area using VHF radio or other means. This will help to avoid collisions and
other accidents.
o Report your position: Report your ship's position to the appropriate
authorities as required.
Specific procedures that need to be followed in different parts of a ship:

Cargo hold:

 Before entering a cargo hold, check the cargo stowage plan to identify any
hazards.
 Always wear PPE, such as safety glasses, hard hat, and gloves.
 Be aware of the weight of the cargo and take appropriate precautions.
 Do not overload the cargo hold.
 Report any problems to the cargo officer immediately.
Accommodation:

 Keep the accommodation clean and tidy.

 Report any damage to the accommodation to the bosun immediately.
 Be aware of the fire safety procedures and follow them carefully.
 Do not smoke in bed or in any other restricted areas.

HOW TO TURN ON THE COMPUTER

Step 1: Find the ‘on’ button. It probably looks like this (but might be square or oblong!):
Step 2: Press the button.

On some computers, the button lights up when the computer is on. On laptops, there is often a
light on the front that comes on. You may have to keep pushing for a couple of seconds to make
this happen, but do not worry – you will soon get to know how your computer works.

Step 3: Now you need to log in.

If you are the only user of your computer, once it’s turned on it may go straight to the desktop:

HOW TO OPEN MICROSOFT WORD

Step 1
Click on the "Windows" button (usually located in the bottom left corner of your screen).

Step 2
Type "Microsoft Word" in the search bar and click on the "Microsoft Word" application that
appears in the search results.
Step 3
If you have a shortcut icon for MS Word on your desktop, you can simply double-click on the
icon to open the application.

Step 4
Once you have opened MS Word, you can start creating and editing documents.

HOW TO BROWSE AN INTERNET

Step 1
Go to a search engine. A search engine is a website that collects and organizes information on the
internet and makes it available for searching.

Step 2
Type what you are looking for into the search bar. You will find the search bar at the top of
most search engines. You can enter a single word, a sentence, a phrase, some numbers, or
anything else you wish.

Step 3
Press the ↵ Enter or ⏎ Return key to run your search. This displays your search results in
a list. If you're using a smartphone or tablet, you may have to tap Search or Go instead. If you
have a KaiOS-based phone, press the center button to run your search.

Step 4
Click or tap a result to view it. If you have found a website that looks like what you want, click
or tap it to open in your browser. To go back to the search results, click or tap your browser's back
button.

How to connect with the Wi-Fi/hotspot

Step 1
Make sure your network is up and running. In order to connect to an internet network, you
need to set up your wireless network. The network's modem must be connected to an Internet
output (e.g., a cable outlet), and the network's router must be connected to the modem. Both the
router and the modem must be turned on.

Step 2
Click the network, volume, and battery button. The button that has icons that
resemble a wireframe globe, speaker, and battery is in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. This
displays a pop-up menu.

Step 3
Click the Wi-Fi button

if necessary. If you are not connected to Wi-Fi, the icon that resembles arching lines in the shape
of a fan will be grey. This means Wi-Fi is turned off. Click this button to turn Wi-Fi on.

Step 4
Select your wireless network and click Connect. You should see your Wi-Fi network name in
the list of available networks. Click your wireless network and then click the blue button that
says Connect.

Step 5
Enter the network's password. In the text box that appears, type in the password used to log into
your network.

Step 6
Click Next. It's below the password text field. Doing so enters the password and attempts to
connect your computer to the network.

Step 7
Wait for the network to connect. Once your computer finishes connecting to the network, you
should see the word "Connected" appear below the network's name. At this point, you're free to
begin using the Internet on your PC.

HOW TO USE THE PROJECTOR

Step 1
Remove the projector's lens cover.
Step 2
Connect the power cord to the projector's power inlet.

Step 3
Plug the power cord into an electrical outlet. The projector's power light turns orange. This
indicates that the projector is receiving power, but is not yet turned on (it is in standby mode).
Step 4
Press the power button on the projector or the remote control to turn on the projector. The
projector beeps and the power light flash green as the projector warms up. After about five
seconds, the power light stops flashing and turns green.

PART VI

THE STOWAWAY
In June 2022, a large cargo ship embarked on a journey across the Pacific Ocean. The ship had a
crew of 30 members. However, an unusual situation arose when an elderly man secretly hid
himself on board the ship before it left port, and no one knew he was there.

As the ship sailed further into the ocean, one of the

crew members accidentally discovered the stowaway.
He initially intended to inform the captain about the
stowaway's presence. However, he suddenly realized
that the stowaway was an old friend of his who was
fleeing from a very dangerous situation in his home
country, with no other means of escape.
Now, as a crew member of the ship, he faced a difficult
decision: should he inform the captain about the
stowaway, risking his old friend being removed from the ship, or should he choose to keep him
hidden, assist his old friend, and potentially even lie to the captain to protect him, despite the risk
of serious consequences if the captain were to find out?
Case Building:
What Will crew member Choose?
Situation:
1. If the crew member decides to tell the captain about the stowaway, there's a chance that
the stowaway will be removed from the ship, and the crew member will remain loyal to
the captain. However, the fate of the stowaway remains
uncertain.

2. If the
plan to protect his old friend. The chances of the old friend
staying safe while concealed on the ship are better, but there is a risk of being caught,
which could lead to serious consequences if the
captain finds out.

If you were the crew member,

what would you choose: loyalty to the
captain or the depth of your friendship with the stowaway?
