DECK SESSION 3
PART I SHIP LABORATORY
The procedure in navigating a ship can be broken down into the following steps:
1. Preparation:
o Check the navigational equipment: This includes the ship's GPS, radar,
ECDIS (electronic charting and display system), and other navigational
instruments. Make sure that all of the equipment is in good working order
and that you are familiar with how to use it.
o Review the passage plan: The passage plan is a document that outlines the
route that the ship will take from its current position to its destination. It
includes information such as the planned speed, course, and navigational
hazards.
o Assess the weather conditions: Be aware of the current weather conditions
and any potential hazards, such as storms or fog.
2. Navigation:
o Monitor the ship's position: Use the ship's navigational equipment to track
the ship's position on the chart.
o Make course corrections: As needed, make course corrections to stay on
track.
o Be aware of other vessels: Keep a proper lookout for other vessels in the
area and be prepared to take evasive action if necessary.
3. Communication:
o Communicate with other vessels: Keep in contact with other vessels in the
area using VHF radio or other means. This will help to avoid collisions and
other accidents.
o Report your position: Report your ship's position to the appropriate
authorities as required.
Specific procedures that need to be followed in different parts of a ship:
Cargo hold:
Before entering a cargo hold, check the cargo stowage plan to identify any
hazards.
Always wear PPE, such as safety glasses, hard hat, and gloves.
Be aware of the weight of the cargo and take appropriate precautions.
Do not overload the cargo hold.
Report any problems to the cargo officer immediately.
Accommodation:
Bridge:
Deck:
In addition to these specific procedures, there are some general safety procedures that
should be followed in all parts of the ship:
CONVERSATION 1
Person 1: What are the main parts of a ship?
Person 2: Well, there's the hull, which is the main body, the bow at the front, and the stern at the
back.
Person 1: What about the top?
Person 2: That's the deck where people and cargo in, and you might find a mast with sails or a
propeller at the stern for propulsion.
Person 1: How does it steer?
Person 2: With a rudder at the stern, and we drop an anchor when we need to stay in one place.
Person 1: Anything else?
Person 2: Sure, there's the bridge where the captain controls everything, and lifeboats for
emergencies, plus hatches for accessing cargo holds.
Person 1: Got it! Thanks for the info.
CONVERSATION 2
Cadet 1 : What is the main part of a ship called?
Cadet 2 : The main part of a ship is called the hull. It's the body of the ship that floats on the water.
Cadet 1 : What are some common types of hulls used in ships?
Cadet 2 : Common types of hulls include the displacement hull, planning hull, and catamaran hull,
each designed for specific purposes and conditions.
Cadet 1 : What's the purpose of the bow of a ship?
Cadet 2 : The bow is the front of the ship, and its primary purpose is to cut through the water and
provide buoyancy, allowing the ship to move forward.
Cadet 1 : What's located at the rear of a ship?
Cadet 2 : The rear of the ship is called the stern. It often houses the ship's propulsion system, like
the propeller or paddlewheel.
Cadet 1 : What's the purpose of the bridge on a ship?
Cadet 2 : The bridge is where the ship is controlled and navigated. It houses instruments, controls,
and the captain's position for steering and managing the vessel.
Cadet 1 : Can you tell me about the function of the keel?
Cadet 2 : The keel is a structural part that runs along the bottom of the hull. It provides stability
and helps prevent the ship from tipping over.
Cadet 1 : What are some other important ship components?
Cadet 2 : Other important components include the superstructure (above the main deck), the mast
(for sails or communication equipment), and the cargo holds (for transporting goods).
Cadet 1 : How about lifeboats? Where are they typically located on a ship?
Cadet 2 : Lifeboats are typically found on the sides of a ship and sometimes on the upper deck.
They are crucial for emergency evacuations in case of a disaster.
Cadet 1 : What's the purpose of the anchor on a ship?
Cadet 2 : An anchor is used to keep a ship in place when it needs to stop or stay stationary. It's
lowered to the seabed to provide stability.
Cadet 1 : Thanks for the information! This was really helpful.
Cadet 2 : You're welcome! If you have any more questions or need further information, feel free
to ask. User: What are the main parts of a ship?

On some computers, the button lights up when the computer is on. On laptops, there is often a
light on the front that comes on. You may have to keep pushing for a couple of seconds to make
this happen, but do not worry – you will soon get to know how your computer works.
If you are the only user of your computer, once it’s turned on it may go straight to the desktop:
Step 2
Type "Microsoft Word" in the search bar and click on the "Microsoft Word" application that
appears in the search results.
Step 3
If you have a shortcut icon for MS Word on your desktop, you can simply double-click on the
icon to open the application.
Step 4
Once you have opened MS Word, you can start creating and editing documents.
Step 2
Type what you are looking for into the search bar. You will find the search bar at the top of
most search engines. You can enter a single word, a sentence, a phrase, some numbers, or
anything else you wish.
Step 3
Press the ↵ Enter or ⏎ Return key to run your search. This displays your search results in
a list. If you're using a smartphone or tablet, you may have to tap Search or Go instead. If you
have a KaiOS-based phone, press the center button to run your search.
Step 4
Click or tap a result to view it. If you have found a website that looks like what you want, click
or tap it to open in your browser. To go back to the search results, click or tap your browser's back
button.
Step 2
Click the network, volume, and battery button. The button that has icons that
resemble a wireframe globe, speaker, and battery is in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. This
displays a pop-up menu.
Step 3
Click the Wi-Fi button
if necessary. If you are not connected to Wi-Fi, the icon that resembles arching lines in the shape
of a fan will be grey. This means Wi-Fi is turned off. Click this button to turn Wi-Fi on.
Step 4
Select your wireless network and click Connect. You should see your Wi-Fi network name in
the list of available networks. Click your wireless network and then click the blue button that
says Connect.
Step 5
Enter the network's password. In the text box that appears, type in the password used to log into
your network.
Step 6
Click Next. It's below the password text field. Doing so enters the password and attempts to
connect your computer to the network.
Step 7
Wait for the network to connect. Once your computer finishes connecting to the network, you
should see the word "Connected" appear below the network's name. At this point, you're free to
begin using the Internet on your PC.
Step 3
Plug the power cord into an electrical outlet. The projector's power light turns orange. This
indicates that the projector is receiving power, but is not yet turned on (it is in standby mode).
Step 4
Press the power button on the projector or the remote control to turn on the projector. The
projector beeps and the power light flash green as the projector warms up. After about five
seconds, the power light stops flashing and turns green.

Welder 1: Hey, can you help me with this weld? I'm not getting a good fusion.
Welder 2: Sure, what kind of weld are you trying to do?
Welder 1: It's a fillet weld. I'm trying to join these two pieces of steel.
Welder 2: Okay, let's take a look.
(Welder 2 examines the weld.)
Welder 2: It looks like you're not getting enough heat into the weld. Try increasing your amperage.
Welder 1: Okay, I'll give that a try.
(Welder 1 adjusts the amperage and tries again.)
Welder 1: That's better. I'm getting a good fusion now.

THE STOWAWAY
In June 2022, a large cargo ship embarked on a journey across the Pacific Ocean. The ship had a
crew of 30 members. However, an unusual situation arose when an elderly man secretly hid
himself on board the ship before it left port, and no one knew he was there.
2. If the
plan to protect his old friend. The chances of the old friend
staying safe while concealed on the ship are better, but there is a risk of being caught,
which could lead to serious consequences if the
captain finds out.
