Prior Learning: It will be helpful if children have experience of solving problems using information presented in line graphs.

Learning Sequence

Twinklville and New Twinklton: Answer the questions about the line graph shown on the Lesson Presentation,
which shows how the population of two places has changed over time.

United Twinkldom Population Data: Discuss the table of data shown on the Lesson Presentation, which
shows the population of the United Twinkldom (UT) over eighty years, based on census data. Ask the children
how they would present this data as a graph, explaining their reasoning.

United Twinkldom Population Line Graph: Explain that a line graph is used to show changes over time.
Use the corresponding slides from the Lesson Presentation to demonstrate how to draw a line graph of the
UT population data, emphasising the features of a line graph. Discuss how the continuous line of the graph
represents the change in population over time.

United Twinkldom Population Line Graph Questions: Rehearse interpreting and reading line graphs accurately
by answering the questions shown on the Lesson Presentation, relating to the UT population line graph.

Population Line Graphs: Children complete the differentiated Population Line Graphs Activity Sheets, to
show they can construct a line graph and use it to solve problems.

Missing Information: Using their understanding of constructing line graphs, the children work in partners to
decide who has best represented the missing information on the line graph shown on the Lesson Presentation.
Share the answers and discuss.

Investigateit: Investigate the population changes for different countries or towns and use computer spreadsheet software to represent the
data in line graphs.
Drawit: Use these differentiated Line Graph Activity Sheets to gain further practice in drawing line graphs.
