VACANCY (GAMSBERG PROJECT)


TAU Mining Contractors (Pty) Ltd. currently have the following vacancy available at the Vedanta
Gamsberg project in the Northern Cape:

Position: Reliability Engineer

Nature of employment: Limited Duration Contract for Gamsberg project (estimated remaining duration:
4 years)
Payroll category: Monthly salaried staff
Reports to: Engineering Manager

Job purpose:

To implement, administer and monitor maintenance systems and standards for the Engineering and
Maintenance Department to predictably deliver and sustain the required performance and cost objectives
related to Earthmoving Equipment and other allocated assets. The key output of the role is to establish a
Reliability Engineering program that meets the business needs and cascade this program to all allocated
assets across the operation. Ensure that maintenance and repairs of Earthmoving Equipment is timeously
executed in accordance to set standards, approved budget, SOP’s and the Reliability Engineering
program.

Key performance areas

Provide support to the Engineering manager with regards to the following:

1. Asset management

o Ensure that the entire fleet of equipment is properly recorded/accounted for on the Asset
Management System/Asset Register.
o Ensure that the Asset management register and maintenance systems are kept up to date with a high
level of data integrity.
o Ensure that all services, maintenance and repairs are properly scheduled, timeously executed and
accurately recorded.

2. Fleet reliability and performance

o Monitor equipment reliability trends per equipment type, to ensure that 85% fleet availability is
maintained,
o Monitor equipment MTBF and MTTR tempos/ratios to ensure that these are within industry norm and
at acceptable standards.
o Develop and implement strategies to address and/or optimize/ improve equipment performance
where required.
o Develop and implement equipment lifecycle.

3. Services & repairs:

o Ensure that all Engineering activities are pre-planned, scheduled, properly & timeously executed
and conducted as per OEM guidelines and intervals for each machine type and model.

o Study and keep abreast of OEM manuals and specifications to ensure that all work is performed
correctly.
o Assist Engineering team to perform diagnostics and troubleshooting to identify problems and resolve
equipment malfunctions.
o Ensure that Artisans attend to all breakdowns or equipment malfunctions/failures reported with
urgency and continuously update the Maintenance and Production Managers on repair progress and
expected work completion timelines.
o Implement systems to ensure frequent over-inspections are executed on work done by artisans and
assistants to ensure that work is executed to high standards.
o Implement systems to ensure that no equipment leaves the workshop or repair area in a poor state
and that lubricants are re-filled to appropriate levels before re-starting of equipment. (Implement a
high level of control/ control mechanisms to avoid “dry starts” at all times)

4. Legal duties and obligations:

o Perform legal duties as Appointee in terms of Mine Health and Safety Act,
o Ensure that all subordinates are authorized to work in writing by the applicable Engineer.
o Ensure that all activities are conducted in a safe and responsible manner and promote a safe work
culture.
o Ensure compliance with all client/company SOP’s, Policies, procedures, provisions and stipulations
of the MHSA.

5. Administration & housekeeping:

o Ensure that all designated areas of work are neat and well kept.
o Implement and administer tool and equipment issue control registers and exercise proper control of
all assets, including tools, equipment and LDV’s, allocated to the section/Superintendents.
o Ensure that all artisans and employees within the section adhere to stores and procurement
procedures when spares or other stock are required.
o Ensure that all work performed by subordinates is duly captured and accounted for on job cards,
signed off and submitted to the maintenance administration department.
o Ensure that Engineering stock levels and items on site match with counts and reports on the
Maintenance system.

6. Budgeting, reporting and continuous improvement

o Ensure that allocated section budget is adhered to and behave in a cost- conscious manner at all
times.
o Investigate premature component failures in conjunction with the Engineering Manager to perform
root cause analysis.
o Compile and present a monthly report for the Section.
o Develop, propose and implement cost saving initiatives.

7. Engineering HR Function:

(To be performed in conjunction with the HR Dept)

o Act as mentor for allocated section. Identify and propose training interventions and programs to
Engineering Manager to ensure that subordinates are developed in terms of set IDP’s.
o Develop and implement a succession plan for Dept.
o Manage discipline & initiate disciplinary action.
o Manage time & attendance, sick leave and leave rosters for Dept. Ensure that overtime is planned,
properly managed and pre-approved as per overtime procedure.

o Monitor time spent by subordinates on the mine and ensure compliance with legal attendance
parameters.

8. Manage and lead the planning department.

o Ensure that all maintenance strategies are planned according to the Tau mining operating model.
o Provide couching, support and leadership to all subordinates within Dept.
o Ensure that all the maintenance strategies are automated on the computer-based maintenance
system.

Minimum Job requirements:

o Qualified Mechanical Engineer (N. Dip or Degree) with at least 5 years related post-graduation
experience,
o Additional course or qualification completed related to Maintenance System management/ Reliability
Engineering (Heavy Earthmoving Equipment)
o Valid driver’s license and clean criminal record.

Knowledge, Attitude, Skills & Abilities:

o Excellent knowledge of heavy earthmoving equipment fleet maintenance, repairs and diagnostics
within an open cast mining environment.
o High level of energy and ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
o Job ownership and accountability.
o Ability to schedule and prioritize work, multi-tasking ability.
o Excellent people (supervisory) and administration skills (including computer skills; MS Office,
Pragma/Asset management system).
o Good knowledge of MHSA & applicable Labour legislation (BCEA, LRA).
o Financial/numerical acumen & presentation skills.
o Sober habits and professional.
o Willing to work extended hours.
