UNIT 8: GERUND – INFINITIVE

Gerund (Danh động từ) là những từ có cấu trúc như một động từ, nhưng lại có chức
năng làm danh từ. Danh động từ là những động từ thêm “ing” để biến thành danh từ.
Infinitive (Động từ nguyên mẫu) là những động từ có cấu trúc cơ bản nhất. Động từ
nguyên mẫu được chia thành 2 loại: động từ đi kèm bởi “to”, và động từ không có “to”.
I. GERUND (DANH ĐỘNG TỪ)
1. Cách sử dụng danh động từ
- Dùng làm chủ ngữ trong câu.
Ví dụ: Reading helps you improve your vocabulary.
- Dùng làm bổ ngữ cho động từ
Ví dụ: Her favorite hobby is collecting stamps. (Sở thích của cô ấy là sưu tầm tem.)
- Dùng làm tân ngữ của động từ

Có 2 loại động từ nguyên mẫu:
- Động từ nguyên mẫu có "to" (to infinitives)
- Động từ nguyên dạng không to (bare infinitives).
1. Động từ nguyên mẫu có “to”
1.1. Cách sử dụng
- Dùng làm chủ ngữ trong câu:
Ví dụ: To learn English well is important to your future job. (Học tiếng Anh rất tốt cho
công việc tương lai của bạn)
- Dùng làm bổ ngữ cho động từ:
Ví dụ: The most important thing for you now is to learn hard. (Điều quan trọng nhất đối
với bạn là học tập chăm chỉ.)
- Dùng làm tân ngữ của động từ, tính từ:
Ví dụ:
He wants to learn English. (Anh ấy muốn học tiếng Anh.)
I am pleased to hear that you have passed your exam. (Tôi mừng khi biết rằng bạn đã
vượt qua kỳ thi đó)
- Dùng sau hình thức bị động của động từ số 1:
Ví dụ: We were made to work overtime yesterday. (Chúng tôi đã làm để làm thêm giờ

- Dùng sau động từ số 1 và tân ngữ:

III. CÁC LOẠI MỆNH ĐỀ QUAN HỆ
1. Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định
- Là một mệnh đề phụ đứng sau một danh từ chưa rõ nghĩa nhằm xác định rõ hơn về danh
từ đó.
- Mệnh đề này là thiết yếu vì không có nó ta sẽ không hiểu danh từ trước đó đề cập đến
ai, cái gì
* Chú ý về mệnh đề quan hệ xác định:
Chú ý 1: Khi mệnh đề quan hệ có một giới từ ta phải giữ nguyên ở phía sau hoặc đảo lên
trước đại từ quan hệ.
- Không dùng giới từ trước: that, who, where, when
Thường dùng: giới từ + whom (chỉ người); giới từ + which (chỉ vật)
Ví dụ: The man is the chairman of the company. You have just talked to him.  The man
to whom you have just talked is the chairman of the company.
- Giới từ “without” luôn phải đảo lên trước đại từ quan hệ.
Ví dụ: The woman without whom I can’t live is Jane.
- Cụm động từ không thể tách rời (Phrasal verbs) thì giới từ không được đảo lên trước đại
từ quan hệ.
Ví dụ: Did you find the word which you were looking up?
Chú ý 2: Mệnh đề quan hệ không nhất thiết phải đi ngay sau danh từ nó xác định mà có
thể đứng cách danh từ cần xác định bởi một từ hay một cụm từ nào đó.
Ví dụ: There is something in the newspaper which you would be interested in.
Chú ý 3: Khi who/whom/that là tân ngữ trong mệnh đề quan hệ xác định ta có thể lược
bỏ.

- Đứng sau danh từ đã rõ nghĩa. Nó không nhằm xác định rõ hơn cho danh từ đứng trước.

Chú ý 3: Trong mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định, “which” có thể dùng để thay thế cho ý
nghĩa của cả mệnh đề phía trước, thường thay cho “it, this” được tách bởi dấu phẩy. Dịch là

Ví dụ: He didn’t succeed. It made me disappointed.  He didn’t succeed which made me

1. Mệnh đề quan hệ rút gọn chủ động: Khi V trong mệnh đề quan hệ chia ở chủ động ta
bỏ đại từ quan hệ “which/who/that”, V đưa về V-ing.

2. Mệnh đề quan hệ rút gọn bị động: Khi V trong mệnh đề quan hệ chia ở bị động ta bỏ
đại từ quan hệ which/who/that, V đưa về VP2
S + who/which/that + be VP2 … + V (chính) + O.
= S + VP2 + V (chính) + O.
Ví dụ: The man who was badly injured in the accident yesterday was the head-master.

3. Mệnh đề quan hệ rút gọn của danh từ và tính từ
Khi MĐQH có “to be + N/adj”, ta có thể lược bỏ đại từ quan hệ, chủ ngữ nếu có và “to
be”; chỉ giữ lại N hoặc adj. Vì vậy xaye ra trường hợp hai danh từ đứng liền nhau hoặc tính
từ đứng sau danh từ.
Ví dụ: Mr Jackson, who is a professor, is travelling in the Mideast this year.
 Mr Jackson, a professor, is travelling in the Mideast this year.
4. Mệnh đề quan hệ có thể rút gọn về “to V”:

- Khi trước danh từ có các từ chỉ số thứ tự, so sánh nhất (chủ động rút về “to V”; bị động
rút về “to be VP2”)

Thank you for your interest in our videoconferencing services. I hope the following
information will be helpful.
Two point videoconferences are billed at $200 per hour. Multiple point conferences are $350
per hour. Reservations may only be made by calling Sprung Technologies at 1-800-
VIDEOCON. We can set up a conference in the location of your choice, or you can come to
our officers. After making the reservation, the client should active at the location of the
videoconference about ten minutes early. The videoconference will start automatically in the
designed room. The conference will also end automatically after the allotted time has
expired. Questions or technical problems can be addressed at the time of the conference
through our customer service line.
