BOYLE’S LAW ACTIVITY SHEET

Robert Boyle observed the relationship between the pressure and volume for a gas sample. These two
variables are INVERSELY PROPORTIONAL. This means that when the pressure goes up the volume
goes down. This is expressed in the equation P1V1 = P2V2, which is known as Boyle’s Law. The
relationship between pressure and volume is only observed when the temperature and amount of gas
particles do not change. The graph below shows this relationship.

P1V1 = P2V2
where:
P1 = initial pressure
V1 = initial volume
P2 = final pressure
V2 = final volume

Any unit of pressure and volume may be used. However, uniformity of units must be observed.

Sample problem #1:

The initial volume is 5 L at the pressure 1 atm. What is the volume if we increased the pressure to 2
atm.
Given:
P1 = 1 atm
V1 = 5 L
P2 = 2 atm
V2 = ?

Formula: P1V1 = P2V2

Solution: (1 atm)(5 L) = (2 atm)(V2)
(1 atm)(5 L)
V2 =
2 atm
V2 = 2.5 L
(the pressure increases, the volume decreases)

Sample problem #2:

A gas occupies 12.3 L at a pressure 40.0 mmHg. What is the volume when the pressure is increased
to 120.0 mmHg?
Given:
P1 = 40.0 mmHg
V1 = 12.3 L
P2 = 120.0 mmHg
V2 = ?

Formula: P1V1 = P2V2

Solution: (40.0 mmHg)(12.3 L) = (120.0 mmHg)(V2)
(40.0 mmHg)(12.3 L)
V2 =
120.0 mmHg
V2 = 4.1 L
(the pressure increases, the volume decreases)
