Assignment 1 (10 marks)

Design a 2-element matching network at 2.4 GHz to match 20+10*j ohm impedance at the
load to 50 ohm impedance at the source, then perform Electromagnetic simulation for the
designed inductor value:

The following simulations are required:

Ideal matching:
• Add port 1 (50 ohms, for the source) and port 2 (20 ohms resistance and 10 for reactance, for
the load) as shown below:

add the ideal matching network components (from analoglib), perform Sp Simulations from 1
GHz to 3.8 GHz, and plot S11 and S21 in dB. (2 marks)
Inductor Implementation:
• State the selected metal and its width to design the required inductor and justify your choice. (1
mark)
• A screenshot of your designed inductor layout, indicating its dimensions and ports locations and
perform EM simulation to get the required inductance value. (1 mark)
• Using the S-parameter file generated from the EM simulation through the “nport” component,
create a testbench to characterize the implemented inductor, plot the inductor value, quality
factor versus frequency and state its self-resonance frequency. (2 marks)
• Perform Sp analysis again using the EM file and capacitor from the kit, plot S11 and S21 in dB
and compare with the ideal matching circuit previously simulated and comment on the
difference between the simulation results. (4 marks)

Hint: you may need to tune the inductor value slightly due to its losses.
