PODSUMOWANIE
Dla historyka królestw anglosaskich Wschodni Sasi są
nader interesujący, choć należy żałować, że nie zachowało
się więcej informacji. Królestwo to jest szczególnie cie-
kawe ze względu na swój złożony, choć czasem enigma-
tyczny system władzy królewskiej i z powodu informacji
dostarczanych na temat praktyki władzy zwierzchniej
wśród Anglosasów. Królestwo Wschodnich Sasów nigdy
nie wydało żadnego wielkiego władcy zwierzchniego,
choć przez pewien czas sprawowali oni władzę zwierzch-
nią nad Środkowymi Sasami, a nawet przez krótki okres
władali częścią Kentu, biorąc tym samym odwet na ludzie,
który dominował nad nimi na początku VII w. Królestwo
to często znajdowało się pod władzą zewnętrznych wład-
ców zwierzchnich, ale niekoniecznie było przez nich uci-
skane i jesteśmy w posiadaniu dowodów świadczących o
tym, że królowie i dostojnicy kościelni potrafili obracać
na swą korzyść złożoną sytuację polityczną. Nie da się
wykazać, że zachodniosascy i mercyjscy władcy
zwierzchni dysponowali takim samym prawem do nada-
wania ziemi w prowincji wschodniosaskiej co środkowo-
saskiej. Jeszcze bardziej niezwykły i znaczący od tego, że
prowincja Wschodnich Sasów często była rządzona przez
zewnętrznych władców zwierzchnich jest fakt, że króle-
stwo to tak długo pozostało niezależne. Choć Wschodni
Sasi utracili na rzecz Æthelbalda i Offy kontrolę nad Lon-
dynem i prowincją środkowosaską, zachowali oni swój
własny ród królewski, który na początku IX w. był jedną z
pięciu anglosaskich dynastii, co do których możemy być
pewni, że jeszcze wtedy istniały.

Mercja w pełni pojawia się na scenie dziejów za pa-
nowania Pendy. Choć jego śmierć da się z pewnością da-
tować na czas bitwy nad rzeką Winwæd w 655 r.[23], data
jego wstąpienia na tron nie jest już tak pewna[24]. Auto-
rzy z różnych królestw mieli w tej sprawie różne poglądy,
co być może zależało od tego, kiedy ich macierzyste pro-
wincje po raz pierwszy weszły w kontakt z Pendą. Według
Kroniki anglosaskiej Penda wstąpił na tron w 626 r., i
„zasiadał na nim przez 30 lat, a przecież, gdy go obejmo-
wał miał 50 lat”.
Ostatnia część tego ostatniego zdania jest nader nie-
prawdopodobna i, jak sugeruje profesor Brooks, jest bar-
dziej możliwe, że kronikarz miał na myśli, iż Penda pano-
wał przez 30 lat, a 50 miał w chwili śmierci[25]. Dla
Bedy panowanie Pendy rozpoczyna się w 633 r., w rezul-
tacie odegranej przez niego roli w klęsce zadanej królowi
Edwinowi w bitwie pod Hatfield Chase[26]. Historia
Brittonum datuje objęcie władzy przez Pendę na czas
jeszcze późniejszy, tzn. po bitwie pod Maserfelth/Cocboy
w 642 r., w której zginął Oswald. Według anonimowego
kronikarza Penda był następcą swego brata, Eowy, który
również poniósł śmierć w bitwie[27].
