D. Explain Trigonometric Ratios of 𝟒𝟓° − 𝟒𝟓° − 𝟗𝟎° Right Triangle

In Geometry, the following sides of 𝟒𝟓° − 𝟒𝟓° − 𝟗𝟎° right triangles are
related as follows:

45° Hypotenuse
Leg (Leg × √2 )

45°
Leg
where, the legs are congruent and the length of the hypotenuse is √2
times the length of a leg (hypotenuse = 𝑙𝑒𝑔√2).
If the length of the legs is missing and the length of the hypotenuse

Values of the trigonometric functions of 𝟒𝟓°

If the measure of an acute angle of a right triangle is 45°, then the

other acute angle also measures 45°. So the triangle is an isosceles
right triangle.

Consider the triangle ABC with 𝑚∠𝐵 = 90° and 𝑚∠𝐴 = 𝑚∠𝐶 = 45°.
A

45°

45°
B C
a
It can be seen in the triangle above that |𝐴𝐵| = |𝐵𝐶|. Let |𝐴𝐵| = |𝐵𝐶| =
𝑎. The length of the hypotenuse |𝐴𝐶| can be obtained using the
Pythagorean formula,
|𝐴𝐶|2 = |𝐴𝐵|2 + |𝐵𝐶|2
|𝐴𝐶|2 = 𝑎2 + 𝑎2
|𝐴𝐶|2 = 2𝑎2
|𝐴𝐶| = 𝑎√2

Hence, we can find the values of the trigonometric functions of 45°

from the right triangle ABC.

|𝐵𝐶| 𝑎 √2 1
sin 45° = |𝐴𝐶| = 𝑎√2 = csc 45° = sin 45° = √2
2

|𝐴𝐵| 𝑎 √2 sec 45° = cos 45° = √2
cos 45° = |𝐴𝐶|
= 𝑎√2 = 2 1
|𝐵𝐶| 𝑎 cot 45° = tan 45° = 1
tan 45° = |𝐴𝐵| = 𝑎 = 1
