We give thanks to Allah S.W.T. with His grace and permission we were able to
complete the writing of this paper smoothly. We would like to express our thanks to Mrs. Siti
Fitri Hasibuan, M.Hum, as the lecturer in the "English" course. And we would also like to
thank all our friends for their support so that the author could complete the writing of this
paper. This paper discusses aboute Adjective. More precisely, discussing the meaning of
adjective, division of adjective, and so on. This paper is certainly far from perfect. Therefore,
the author will gladly accept criticism and suggestions from readers. And finally, the author
hopes that this paper can increase reader’s insight into adjective’s.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background
As time goes by, things are becoming more and more advanced both in terms of
science, technology, economics and various other things. Talking about human
language cannot be separated from language without human language, it is difficult
to communicate, both for communicating between friends between regions and even
between countries, which of course requires skills and knowledge so that what we are
going to convey can reach the listener (interlocutor). Although not everyone likes
English lessons, many ordinary people even think it is not important. However, due
to developments over time and competition between countries, it is very difficult.
Good and correct language is language that is in accordance with grammar or in
English it is called grammar. Therefore, it is important for us to study grammar so
that language delivery is easier to understand and in accordance with language rules.
Adjectives are one of the various discussions in grammar, of course by making this
short paper students are expected to be able to understand what and how and what
types of adjectives are.

DISCUSS

A. Definition of Adjective’s
An adjective is a part of speech that can be used to describe or provide more
information about a noun or pronoun that acts as the subject in a sentence. Adjectives
are found after the verb or before the noun it modifies.

The Oxford Learner’s Dictionary defines an adjective as “a word that describes a


person or thing, for example ‘big’, ‘red’ and ‘clever’ in a big house, red wine and a
clever idea”. An adjective is “a word belonging to one of the major form classes in
any of numerous languages and typically serving as a modifier of a noun to denote a
quality of the thing named, to indicate its quantity or extent, or to specify a thing as
distinct from something else”, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.1

B. Type of Adjective’s
Adjectives can be divided into different categories based on their functions when
used in a sentence.2
1. Descriptive adjective
Descriptive adjective are adjectives that describe the characteristics, traits,
or qualities of a noun or pronoun. Most adjectives are descriptive
adjectives. Words such as purple, friendly, and attractive are examples of
descriptive adjectives.
Descriptive adjective example :
a) A lot of interesting people visit this park.
b) She told a scary story.
c) The leaves turned orange and red.

2. Comperative adjective
Comparative adjectives are used to compare two different people or things
to each other. Some examples of comparative adjectives include words
such as smaller, faster, more expensive, and less reasonable. Example of
Comparative adjective example :
a) Whales are larger animals than dolphins.
b) We moved to a cheaper apartment.
c) The sequel was even more incredible than the first movie.
3. Superlative adjectives
Superlative adjectives are used to compare more than two people or things
by indicating which one is the most supreme or extreme. Some examples
of superlative adjectives include words such as smartest, loudest, most
impressive, and least valuable.
Superlative adjective examples :
a) Adrian is the fastest member of our team.
b) Out of all of my books, this one is the oldest.
4. Possessive adjectives
Possessive adjective are often used to express possession or ownership.
The most commonly used possessive adjective’s are my, your, its, her, his,
our, their, and whose.
Possessive adjective examples
a) My favorite food is pizza.
b) Sydney spent the day with her parents.
c) Canadians celebrated their team’s victory at the Olympics.
5. Demonstrative adjectives
Demonstrative adjectives are used to express relative positions in space
and time. The most commonly used demonstrative adjectives
are this, that, these, and those.
Demonstrative adjective examples :
a) This watch is cheaper than that one.
b) This weekend is going to be really fun.

c) Watch out for those prickly rose bushes next to you.
6. Quantitative adjectives
Quantitative adjective are used to clarify, add, describe the quantity of a
thing or noun that we will explained. The most commonly used
quantitative adjectives are two, half, some, more, many, most.
Quantitative adjective example :
a) There are 12 people in this room
b) Some of them are male
c) Many of them are female

A. Conclusion
Adjectives are a part of speech used to describe or provide more information about
a noun or pronoun in a sentence. They are found after the verb or before the noun it
modifies. Adjectives can be classified into descriptive, comparative, superlative,
possessive, demonstrative, and quantitative adjectives. Descriptive adjectives
describe the characteristics, traits, or qualities of a noun or pronoun, while
comparative adjectives compare two different people or things. Superlative adjectives
compare more than two people or things by indicating which one is the most supreme
or extreme. Possessive adjectives express possession or ownership, while
demonstrative adjectives express relative positions in space and time. Quantitative
adjectives clarify, add, or describe the quantity of a thing or noun.

B. Suggestion
Adjective material is very useful for everyday conversation. Therefore, teachers
must convey material to students correctly. And students also have to pay attention
to understand it.
