Chapter I

Preliminary

A. Background
Everything has to start from the basics, including learning English. If know
and understand the basics of language.

English it will be easier to learn more complex sentence forms. Starting from
learning basic word forms, sentences, pronunciation, and writing. When you
understand the basics, it will be easier to understand the next material. English
is indeed quite complicated if the basic understanding is not good, but if you
understand it well, English will feel much easier.

B. Formulation of The Problem

1. What is an appositive?
2. What are the types of appositive?

C. Destination

Discussion

A. Definition of Appositive

Definition of An appositive phrase is a word or phrase that functions to

explain or describe the noun or pronoun that it follows.

Appositive actually serves to provide additional information from the noun or

pronoun it follows and is flexible.

How do you mean flexible? This phrase does not have to be applied to every
sentence because with this phrase a sentence will not be disturbed in terms of
meaning and wholeness. You could say this phrase is an additional
modification in a sentence.

The appositive is also one of the many rhetorical devices in English.

Therefore, we can conclude that the use of appositive in a sentence is intended

to achieve a certain effect like other rhetorical devices.

B. Types of Appositive

1. Restrictive appositive

A noun or noun phrase that contains important information (essential

elements) related to the noun it describes.

2
In this way, the assumption is that the existence of the appositive is important
for the integrity of the meaning of the sentence and this makes the appositive
we cannot simply get rid of.

For example: Yudi's friends, Ines, have a crush on my brother. In the previous
example sentence, Yudi is described as having a friend named Ines.

This does not mean that Yudi does not have other friends, but rather an
appositive that is used to explain in a limited way who Yudi's friends are that
you want to mention in the sentence.

If it is omitted, we do not know the specific names of Yudi's friends.

2. Non-restrictive appositive

A non-restrictive appositive is a noun or noun phrase that is considered non-

essential in its existence, because if it is omitted, it does not interfere with the
integrity of the meaning of the sentence.

This form is what we most often encounter when using Appositive in

sentences, where the information we add is indeed only extra or additional
information.
