A tropical rainforest usually has about five layers of forest vegetation. The first layer is called
the emergent layer. In this layer, trees could grow up to 40 metres or more in height. Many
large birds and insects can be found here.
The second layer is called the canopy layer. This layer cuts off sunlight to the other
layers below it. The trees are leafy thus area forming a big roof over the forest. Birds and
animals such as squirrels and monkeys living in this area run along the branches of trees to
get the flowers, fruits and nuts.

2
The third layer is known as the middle layer. The trees here are between 5 and 20
metres tall. The branches are strong enough to carry the weight of large animals such as
leopards and panthers. These animals spend part of their lives resting in the branches or
waiting to attack small animals passing below them.
The next layer is the shrub layer. The vegetation here is thin and consists mainly of
woody shrubs. Many small animals can be found here.
The plant life on the ground layer consists of herbs, ferns and tree seedlings. They do
not need much sunlight to grow. Most animals in the last layer have small bodies to enable
them to move through the thick undergrowth.

Read the following text. Then, complete the graphic organiser.

We often read in the newspapers about fire destroying homes, damaging

properties and even taking lives. We never know when a fire can break out so the
best thing to do is be prepared.
When a fire breaks out in your school, everyone in the class should leave the
building immediately in an orderly manner. Someone should call the fire department
at once. At the same time, try to reduce any draughts that may fan the fire by closing
the doors and windows of the room where the fire has started. If you must go back
into the building to save someone, cover your nose with a wet cloth to protect your
lungs.
If you a trapped in a fire, close the doors of the room you are in. Block any cracks
with cloth or paper to prevent smoke from seeping into the room. Open the
windows and try to attract attention by shouting at anyone passing by. Lean out the
window if the room is filled with smoke. If you are unable to do that, lie close to the
floor where there is less smoke until the fire brigade arrives.
By now, you should have a clearer idea of what you need to do in case of a fire. In
order to help you prepare for such emergencies, the school should conduct regular
fire drills. Besides that, it is important to make sure that the fire extinguishers are
available and properly maintained.

Good morning, teachers and fellow students. Today, I would like to share with you
some tips on how to promote good character and moral values in school.
Firstly, we must create awareness on the appropriate moral values among
students. Besides rewarding students who have done well in exams, students with
good conduct should also be recognised.
Next, there should be awards given to students who have shown good behaviour.
Monthly awards for good behaviour should be given to deserving students. Examples
of such awards are the ‘Most Polite Student’ and ‘Most Caring Student’. This will
allow students to focus on the importance of having good moral values apart from
doing well in their studies.
Weekly activities that promote good moral values should be encouraged.
Students can be encouraged to perform a short skit based on specific moral values
such as kindness and honesty. These skits should highlight good moral values in an
interesting and amusing way.
Each class could also create a bulletin board to display a write – up on what makes
up good moral character. Students can contribute their own essays, prose and
poems to be displayed on the board.
Finally, students should be encouraged to do a good deed every day. They should
jot down their experience in a logbook. The logbook keeps a record of good deeds a
student has done in a year. At the end of the year, the student who has the most
number of good deeds will be given a prize.
I hope these tips will help to promote good character and moral values in school.
Thank you.
