Chapter 16: Aztec Children


Children’s clothing
o Before the age of three, most of the kids ran
around without any clothes.
o After the age of three, the children’s clothing
looked like their parents'.
o The boys would wear a cape, tied on the shoulders
and girls would wear blouses identical to their
mothers.
o Girls started wearing skirts from the age of four
and after age five, the skirts became longer.
o Boys, on the other hand, started wearing loincloths
from the age of about 13.

Behaviour and discipline of the Aztec children


 The Aztec parents were thought to have been very loving but also strict with their children.
 Aztec parents made sure that their children knew their responsibilities and had an
understanding of society's needed life skills.
 The children were taught to behave a certain way.
 Each child was warned against gambling, gossiping, thieving, and drunkenness.
 The parents taught the children to work hard, be humble, and be respectful.
 If Aztec children misbehaved, then their punishment would be quite harsh.
 For example, a child would be forced to inhale chili pepper smoke if they were being rude.

 Children, especially teenagers, were required to spend some nights doing night watch.
 It was to train the children not to be lazy and sleep too much.
 It was also to pray to the Lord of the Near and the Night.

 Furthermore, children were to walk quickly in public but with their heads held high.
 They were taught to speak slowly, using a soft voice, and breathe evenly.
 When they were speaking to someone outside of the family, children were not to stare at
one’s face.
 The last teaching was to be obedient and diligent when asked to do a job.

Education for Aztec children


 During ancient times, education was free.
 It was also mandatory by Aztec law and even the slaves were allowed the same privilege.
 Education for children depended on their family status.
 The children of nobles would have more opportunities than those of a farmer.
 For example, the children of Macehualtin went to Telpochcalli school to learn.

† Aztec boys had a separate school from girls.


† Aztec children who did well in school would be sent to Calmecac, which was a school
attended by the nobility.
† The Aztec priests at these schools taught everything here.
† The students learned about religion, governing, astronomy, history, and poetry.
† Aztec children who attended this school would, later on, become priests or government
officials and leaders.

 Aztec boys started their education at 15 years old at the Calmecac.


 Those who did not attend this school went to Cuicacalli, a junior military academy.
 Aztec girls learned more at home.
 They would learn how to weave cloth and later
cooking.
 For noble girls, at the age of 13, they were chosen to
serve the priestesses or go under training to become
one themselves.

Aztec children and games
Games and sports were also important in Aztec society.
Ullamaliztli was a game played by using a rubber ball.
Patolli was a popular board game.
The children would also play with stones and bows and arrows.
In addition to the games and fun, music was important for Aztec children.
They were taught how to play musical instruments and to sing the many important Aztec
songs.

Marriage for young Aztecs


 Marriage in Aztec society took place at a very young age.

the household until her husband’s return.
