Questions 26-30 are based on the following passage.

1 Dolphins, professed to be the world’s second most intelligent creatures after humans, are so 1
bright that they should be treated as ‘non-human persons’. Studies have shown the
similarities of their communication to those of humans, indicating many key features
associated with high intelligence in dolphin brains. As such, researchers argue, it is morally
unacceptable to keep such intelligent animals in amusement parks or kill them for food or 5
by accident when fishing. Indeed, some 300 000 whales, dolphins and porpoises die in this
way each year.

2 Being at the top of the marine food chain, dolphins and whales play a pivotal role in
ecosystems, but unchecked whaling and illegal hunting have threatened their future.
Collectively known as cetaceans, the whales and their smaller cousins, dolphins and 10
porpoises, are still harpooned worldwide or driven into shallows and killed in traditional
hunts despite international criticism on the controversial nature of these hunts, and the
possible health risk that the polluted meat often causes. Thousands of dolphins are caught
in drive hunts every year.

3 The town of Taiji in Japan is the centre of controversy for its annual drive hunt in which pods 15
of dolphins are herded towards a small, shallow cove and killed. Their escape is prevented
by closing off the route to the open sea or ocean with boats and nets. Each year, from
September to May, over 20 000 dolphins are slaughtered in Japan. This is clearly featured in
‘The Cove’, an Academy Award Winning and Sundance Film Festival award-winning film
about the yearly slaughter of over 23 0000 dolphins at a Taiji cove. 20

4 ‘The Cove’ exposes the cruel practice of dolphin killing in Japan. The entire event is hidden
in secrecy for the most part. Film crew and the public are arrested if they try to view the
slaughter in the heavily guarded cove. Thus, it is kept under the radar for the vast majority
of the world – even the citizens of Japan are unaware of this practice. This event is not open
to the public, cameras are not allowed inside the Taiji cove, nor are the media permitted to 25
cover the story. In fact, the practice is so big and profitable that the Japanese Yakuzza or
Mafia, is involved, providing the security to help keep the cove private.
5 The fishermen, or dolphin hunters in this case, use a technique called drive fishing, in which
the hunters place a line of motorized boats and create a wall of sound between the dolphins
and the open seas. Then, they start banging on metal poles lowered into the water. At one 30
end of the poles, they have bell-shaped devices that specifically amplify the sound waves.
Dolphins are auditory creatures as they use their natural sonar, called echolocation, to help
1
them navigate the oceans. Thus, they are immediately lost or disoriented when threatened.
Terrified, they swim frantically to shore to escape the source of the noise. There, they get 35
corralled into a small cove and trapped overnight by nets. At sunrise the next morning, they
are herded into an adjacent killing cove, where they are stabbed to death by hunters using
harpoons, fish hooks and knives. The emerald waters of the cove literally turn blood-red
with their blood. Some dolphins simply wither away and drown, being injured or exhausted,
while some drown in their own blood. Fishermen drag many still-alive dolphins onto boats 40
with hooks and harpoons or tie them to boats by the tail, forcing their air holes under water.
The dolphins are then hauled by truck or dragged over concrete roads by their tails, to a
nearby warehouse for butchering. If they are still alive, they are stabbed again and left to
die.
6 Activist, Rick O’Barry, exposed the annual killing of dolphins with Louis in his documentary,
‘The Cove’. Then, in August 2010, the cable station Animal Planet aired ‘Blood Dolphins’, a 45
three-part miniseries, in which Rick continued advocating the dolphins across the world. The
film has made waves on the international front, receiving critical praise and awards
worldwide, as well as exposing the cruel practice of dolphin killing and making it an
international issue.

7 The dolphin killing exposed by ‘The Cove’ also involves another unsettling fact ----- mercury- 50
laden meat is still being sold without warnings in Japan, which is often labelled as whale
meat to avoid further scrutiny! Ironically, in the 1950s, the Japanese government had
funded studies in Minamata, Japan and found that eating mercury contaminated dolphin
meat led to ‘Minamata disease’. Although greater awareness and publicity about mercury
poisoning and cruel dolphin hunting at the cove has driven down demand and the total 55
number of dolphins killed annually, the dolphin drive hunt still continues. In September 1,
2013, Taiji residents and fishermen headed back to the cove to massacre more dolphins.

Answer all questions. You are advised to answer them in the order set.
