The tiger is the biggest species of the cat family. It can reach a length of up to
3.3 metres and weigh as much as 300 kilogrammes. Besides Malaysia, the tiger is
also found in Vietnam and Thailand, to name but a few.
In Malaysia, the tiger is an endangered species as it is said that there are only
500 to 600 tigers left in the wild. The main challenge conservationists face in their
effort to preserve this species is that one rarely gets to see them as they live in thick
forests where their tracks are hard to find. Subspecies of the tiger include the
Sumatran tiger, Siberian tiger and Indochinese tiger.
The tigers are often misleadingly thought to be man – eaters. Contrary to
2
popular belief, normally they would avoid making contact with humans. Whenever
they do so, these big cats will disappear into the jungle. In fact, humans are the only
predators of tigers that have driven them to extinction.
This majestic beast is hunted worldwide for its yellowish fur. Its fur is highly
coveted because it has black – coloured stripes all over. The stripes on either side of
the tiger’s body are like an identification number. This is because no two tigers have
the same stripes. What’s more amazing is that the stripes on each side of the body
are different too!
The roar of the tiger is so loud that it can be picked up from two thousand
metres away. Do you know why the tiger roars? Well, it does that solely for reasons;
it is either defending its territory or communicating with other tigers. A tiger never
roars when it aims to attack its prey. Instead, it only makes a deep growling sound.
Now, how do tigers mark their territories? Well, they excrete urine or scratch trees.
It’s as simple as that.
In Malaysia, the tiger is totally protected by the Department of Wildlife and
National Parks. Anyone found guilty of shooting or hunting a tiger can face a fine of
RM 15 000 or up to five years of imprisonment.

now further away. 3._____ Its strong heat burnt my skin as it beat down on me.
I had to decide fast. I took off most of my clothing. 4._____ The water was freezing as I

Dear Gina,
I think we should buy Mom a shawl since she loves wearing shawls. She has a huge
collection of shawls in her wardrobe. She can wear it for any occasion such as dinners or
parties. Maybe we can get her a black lace shawl embroidered with flowers. I think Mum
does not have that colour and design. We can go to Mid Valley Mall this weekend. There is a
sale on so we can get it at a discounted price.
