Soya beans were largely produced and consumed in the East, particularly in
China and Japan. They help to make up a balanced diet because their rich protein
content could be used as a substitute for meat.
Today, soya bean production has spread to other countries. Its popularity as
food item has also increased. In Malaysia, soya beans are processed in various ways
to produce nutritious food with different textures and taste.

2
Besides protein, soya beans also contain other nutrients. They are oil,
carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. In fact, soya bean milk has the same protein
content as cow’s milk. Soya bean products are consumed in a variety of ways such as
soya bean milk, soya bean curd and salted soya beans.
The importance of soya bean products for consumers is more apparent when we

Gardening as a Hobby
Before choosing gardening as a hobby, you must have enough space, whether it’s
outdoors or indoors. You can choose a space in your front yard or backyard that fits
your needs. Choose a good space that is able to give enough sunlight and shade to
your plants.
It is important to select the type of plants you wish to grow in your garden. Not all
plants can grow well in the same soil type. Therefore, you need to choose wisely.
After finding a suitable space to set up your garden, the next thing that you will need
is fertile soil. Soil fertility is important for healthy plant growth and reproduction.
Gardening can be good for you. It offers you self – satisfaction. The satisfaction
gained from seeing how the plants are growing is incredible. The stress hormone,
cortisol, has been proven to decrease while gardening. The good thing about

know we dread going to the gym. We don’t enjoy going on those treadmills for hours.
Statistics show that three hours on the lawn is equivalent to an hour at the gym.

C. Reading Comprehension
Practice 1
Read the article below. Then, answer the following questions.

In many cultures, poor personal hygiene is considered offensive or a sign of

illness. Good personal hygiene is especially important in places that expect and
require proper social etiquette such as in school. Caring for your body regularly can
reduce body odour and improve your personal appearance thus improving others’
perceptions of you. It is also vital in combating and preventing illness for yourself
and for those around you.
The best way to keep yourself clean is to take a bath or shower every day using
a mild soap and warm water. This will help wash away any bacteria that contribute
to the smells emitted. Wearing clean clothes, socks, and underwear each day can
also help you feel clean. If you sweat a lot, you might find that shirts, T – shirts, socks
and underwear made from cotton or other natural materials will help absorb sweat
more effectively. However, you need to make sure that you wash these clothes
before wearing them again as the sweat that had been absorbed can emit smells. If
you’re concerned about the way your underarms smell, you can try using a
deodorant or deodorant with antiperspirant. Deodorants get rid of the odour of
sweat by covering it up and antiperspirants actually stop or dry up perspiration.
Washing your hair every day or every other day can help control oily hair. There
are plenty of shampoos that you can choose and can be found easily at stores that
sell bathroom essentials. These shampoos are similar although they are from
different brands so it would be best if you choose a shampoo specially formulated
for oily hair. Scrubbing or rubbing your scalp too hard doesn’t get rid of oil any better
and can irritate your scalp or damage your hair so try to avoid from doing that. After
you’ve rinsed, you can follow up with a conditioner that would work best for oily
hair.
