Of the 8,600 bird species that exist today, the ostrich is the largest. Ostriches are
still found in the wild in certain parts of Africa and are very well – adapted to desert
life, getting water from the plants they eat. Native to Africa, ostriches are flightless, a
characteristic they share with the emu, rhea and cassowary.

These huge birds, which sometimes reach the height of 2.6 metres and a weight
of 135 kilograms, cannot fly but they are very fast runners. Their small, flat heads and
long necks are downy and their plump bodies are covered with soft feathers. Males
have contrasting bright white and black plumage. The plumage of the females is grey
and drab. Their lead – blue skin colour usually becomes scarlet over the beak, on the
forehead and around the eyes during the mating season.

Even though ostriches are flightless birds, their wings are surprisingly strong.
Ostriches use their wings for aggressive display and courtship rituals. During the hot
weather, ostriches lift and fan their wings while during the cold weather they cover
their thighs with their wings.

The ostrich is the only bird to have only two toes on each foot. The first instinct
of an ostrich upon being frightened is to run.
