C. Reading Comprehension
Practice 1
Read the passage below and then answer the following questions.

In 1912, the largest ship on earth, the Titanic, embarked on her maiden voyage across
the Pacific Ocean. Before the voyage, everyone was confident that the Titanic would never
sink, because its engineers had claimed that the ship was made of very strong steel and that
it had been carefully designed.
As the Titanic sailed across the Pacific Ocean, nobody suspected that a disaster was
about to happen. The Titanic failed to avoid an iceberg and collided with it. The passengers
on board the ship were alarmed by the sudden collision, but thought that it was nothing
serious. Soon, they realised that the ship was sinking.
It was chaotic on board the ship and everyone was rushing for the lifeboats. They soon
found that there were not enough lifeboats for everyone. A lot of people jumped into the
icy waters and they drowned. There were no other ships nearby that could come to the aid
of the sinking ship, although distress calls were sent out over the radio repeatedly. In the
end, only those who got into the lifeboats survived, while the others perished, together with
the Titanic.
