3. Rectangle

c. Motivation
I have here a picture of a bedroom
and a bathroom with floor covered
with tiles.

Guide questions:
a. What is the shape of the bedroom The shape of the bedroom
and the bathroom? and bathroom is rectangle.
b. What covers the bedroom and The bedroom and bathroom
bathroom floor? floor is covered with tiles.
c. What is the shape of each tile? The shape of each tile is
square.
d. Which part is bigger, the bedroom The bigger part of the house is
or the bathroom? the bedroom.
e. Which part would like to clean, the I like to clean the bathroom
bedroom or the bathroom? Why? because it is smaller
compared to the bedroom.

new lesson Everybody read the scenario.

Teacher Remie is having a problem.

She wants to put tiles on her
classroom but she does not know what
is the area of her classroom and how
many tiles will she buy. So, she want to
ask help from her pupils. Will you help
Teacher Remie? Yes, teacher!

Now, based from Teacher

Remie’s problem, what is our topic
today?
Yes, Ayupan. Our topic today is about area.
Very good!
So, this morning to help teacher
Remie solve her problem we will
discuss how to illustrate area of a
plane figure using square-tile unit.

concepts and practicing What is an area?
new skills #1 I have here square-tiles.
What is the shape of this piece of The shape of that tile is
tile? square.
I also have here the teacher’s table
and a book.
Who can lay flat the square tiles on
top of the table, and on the book?
Count how many square tiles cover
the entire table? Book?

Now, what is an area?

Yes, Zibana. Area is the number of tiles
that covered the figure.
Very good!
Area is the number of unit squares
that cover the surface of a plane
figure.
Area is measured in square units.
So, to find the area of a figure,
just count the square tiles that cover
the figure.
What is the area of the teacher’s
table? The area of the teacher’s table
What is the area of the book? is _____ sq. units.
The area of the book is _____
How about this figure, what is the sq. units.

The area of that figure is 4 sq.

units.
Excellent!
Now, you already know how to
find the area of a figure so let’s go
back to teacher Remie’s problem and
help her solve it.

Who will try to find the area?

Yes, Montoya.
The area of our classroom is
Very good! 25 sq. units.
So, many tiles will teacher Remie
buy?
Yes, Ryle.
Teacher Remie needs to buy
Very good! 25 tiles.
