I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, students are expected to:
a. define quartiles;
b. calculate quartiles in ungrouped data;
c. apply quartiles in solving real-life problems.
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Understanding Quartiles| UNGROUPED DATA
Materials: Whiteboard and Markers
Reference: MATH BUILDERS 10 | QUARTILES
III. Procedures
A. Preliminary Activities
 Prayer
The teacher asks one student to lead the
prayer.
 Greetings
The teacher greets everyone.
 Checking of attendance
The teacher checks the attendance of the
students.
 Review
The teachers asks the students about what are
the topics being discussed last meeting
 Motivation
The teacher presents a game called “Four Pics
One Word” and group the students into 4. Each
group will observe the given pictures and figure
out what will was the word, given by those
pictures. Each group will say in class what they
have been observe and what word have they
formed.
B. Lesson Proper
A. Activity
The teacher gives students an activity .
Solve the following:
1
1. 3 (4−1)
1
2. 4 (8-6)
1
3. 5 ( 2 +2)
3
4. 4 (5+1)
1
5. 5 (2+4)

B. Analysis
The teacher asks students the following
questions:
1.How do you find the activity?
2.Do these activity helps you to understand?
C. Abstraction
Quartiles are the three points that divide a data
set into four equal parts such that in the lower
quartile (Q1) lies 25% of the data. In the second
quartile (Q2) lies 50% of the data and (Q3) that
lies 75% of the data. The division is illustrated
below:
For example, let’s say you have a dataset of
exam scores:
65 70 72 75 78 80 82 85 88 90 92
Order Data: Arrange the data in ascending order:
65, 70, 72, 75, 78, 80, 82, 85, 88, 90, 92, 95.
To find for Quartiles, n=11
Q1= ¼(n+1)th =1/4 (11+1) =1/4 (12)=3rd position
Q2= ½ (n+1)th =1/2 (11+1) =1/2 (12)=6th position
Q3= ¾ (n+1) th =3/4 (11+1)=3/4 (12)=9th position
Where “n” = total no. of distribution.
Calculate Quartiles:
Q1 (First Quartile): The value at the 25th
percentile of the dataset. In this case, it’s the
value in third position, which is 72.
Q2 (Second Quartile/Median): The value at the
50th percentile of the dataset. In this case, it’s the
value in sixth position, which is 80.
Q3 (Third Quartile): The value at the 75th
percentile of the dataset. In this case, it’s the
value in 9th position, which is 88.
D. Application
Solve the following problems in the board. Given
the data of 25, 26, 27, 29, 31, 32, 33, 34. Find
for the Q1, Q2, Q3.
IV. Evaluation
Find for Q1, Q2, and Q3.
1. A teacher wants to understand the performance distribution of
her students in a math exam. The scores of 30 students out of
100 are given: 65, 70, 72, 75, 78, 80, 82, 85, 88, 90, 92, 95, 60,
62, 64, 66, 68, 74, 76, 79, 81, 84, 86, 89, 91, 93, 98, 99, 100,
55.
2. A school administrator wants to analyze the test scores of
students in a particular subject. The scores (out of 100) of 25
students are: 78, 82, 85, 88, 90, 92, 94, 95, 96, 98, 100, 102,
105, 108, 110, 112, 115, 118, 120, 122, 125, 128, 130, 135, 140.
3. A company wants to analyze the income distribution of its
employees. The monthly incomes (in dollars) of 15 employees
are: $2500, $2800, $3200, $3500, $3800, $4000, $4200,
$4500, $4800, $5000, $5500, $6000, $6500, $7000, $7500.
