1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 PURPOSE
This Construction Method Statement (CMS) sets out the program and Methodology for the
construction of Weira- Dosha SSIP. It describes a proper work procedure that would be carried
out during construction of headwork & appurtenant Structure as per specification and contract
drawings.

1.2 SCOPE
This Work Method Statement covers the full scope required for the construction of headwork &
appurtenant Structure and covering all key stages in the construction |diversion Weir

1.3 MAJOR COMPONENTS OF THE PROJECT

Weira –Dosha SSI construction project comprises the following components
 General & Preparatory works
o Mobilization
o Demobilization
o Camp
o Access road
o Temporary diversion
o Demolition of damaged structures
 Head work & appurtenant structure
o Diversion weir
o U/s & D/s Cutoff & aprons
o Installation of Gates
1.4 CONSTRUCTION PERIOD
Although 12 months had been sated and agreed for the construction of the project 7 months had
been considered as the construction period for the rest of five months are wet months with heavy
rainfall and high river flow not suitable for construction works.
1.5 Construction plan and Schedules
Since the site possession date is at the end of the first wet season locally called Belg( March-Mid
of April ) the construction period available is only two dry months before the start the main wet
season called Kiremet ( end of June to end of September) .For this, the construction works of the
project had been planned in two Phases. In the first phase Camp facilities, preparatory works and
construction half portion of the head work and appurtenant structure will be conducted and the
remaining part will be conducted in the second phase after the end of the main wet season.

1.6 Construction Material

All material required for the construction works will be mobilized for each phase as per the
approved schedule with their quality as per the specification on contract document. Sand will be
acquired from Sankura quarry site and stone from quarry near Dosha town. Cement and
reinforcement bars will be purchased from suppliers with insured quality.
1.7 Tools & Equipment
Tools & equipment’s required for each activity will be deployed as per the approved schedule
and are listed bellow
 Excavator
 Wheel Loader
 Shovel
 Total Station
 Meter tape
 Mixer 250lit capacity
 Vibrator
 Dewatering Pump
 Compactor
1.8 Personnel
All skilled and un skilled personnel that are required for execution of each activity that will be
assigned and deployed as per the approved schedules includes
 Project Manager
 Site Engineer
 Surveyor
 Construction Forman
 Bar benders
 Masons
 Assistant masons
 Carpenter
 Daily laborers

2. Work Methodology for Major Activities

Weira-Dosha Small Scale Irrigation Project

2.1 General and Preparatory works

2.1.1 Mobilization
To commence the construction activities all required personnel’s, materials, tools and
equipment’s required to set up the camp facilities will be mobilized starting from the site
possession dates. Preliminary activities include the setting up of the contractor’s compounds and
offices for the Contractor and Engineer. After selecting suitable sites for camp facilities in
consultation with stake holders the construction of the camp facilities will commence as per the
standard and specification on the contract documents. Preparatory works for the temporary site
establishments will involve some site clearance work, minor earthworks operations to level the
site, drainage and pavement works for the car park and service installation. Then personnel’s,
materials, tools and equipment’s required for the first phase of construction activities will be
mobilized to the project site as per the approved schedules.

2.1.2 Temporary diversion

Since the construction works is planned in two phases with first comprise the right portion of the
head work and its appurtenant structures, temporary diversion through laterally constriction of
the river section with coffer dam has been chosen to suite the site condition. This method
consists in lateral contraction of the river section by constructing a cofferdam. Thus, obtaining a
dry zone where it is possible to continue building the intake, divide wall, under sluice, operation
slab and installation of gates. During the construction of the appurtenant structures, flow
proceeds through the zone contracted. In a second phase, the cofferdam would be reinstated to
the change the flow direction to the part which is already built and the under sluice section would
then be used to drain the river flow and complete the construction work the left sides of the head
work & appurtenant structures.

2.2Head Work & Appurtenant Structure

The major activities in construction of head work & appurtenant structure are site preparation,
excavation, Cyclopean concrete and reinforced concrete works.
2.2.1 Site Preparation
2.2.1.1 Existing Services
Construction team would conduct an investigation and acquire information about site
services might have been placed/embedded below the ground. Services, wherever
found shall be rerouted and protected to place will not affect site activities.
2.2.1.2 Setting out
Surveyor would conduct the site survey to mark/stake-out the lines and levels of the
objective excavation for foundations as per indicated in the approved drawing.
2.2.2 Excavation
2.2.2.1 The area to be excavated shall be properly marked and clear before starting the
works.
2.2.2.2 Remove the topsoil. Excavate 10–20 centimeter of soil, depending on the depth of the
topsoil layer. Store the topsoil away from other spoil material to avoid contamination.
We will ensure that the topsoil heap does not exceed 1–1.5 meter in height to avoid
compaction. For the same reason, either demarcate the topsoil heap or locate it away
from frequent foot and vehicle traffic.
2.2.2.3 We will dig first cut to the 2m depth. As the trench needs to be "benched"
(excavated in steps), we will dig to the depth of the first bench. We will make
subsequent entrenchments to the depth of each bench prior to digging deeper, so the
banks of each bench will remain stable throughout the process.
2.2.2.4 We will Keep the removed soil as far from the excavation as possible. Throw the
spoil (the removed soil) far enough that it will not encumber workers while working
in and around the trench. This will also prevent the removed material from creating
an overburdening of the trench's banks or sides, which would increase the risk of
collapse
2.2.2.5 The depth of excavation shall be periodically checked by a surveyor to avoid over
excavation. The bank of excavated area shall be sloped 30 degrees and shall be
maintained to avoid a collapse of the bank into the excavated area.

2.2.2.6 All excavated material shall be kept a minimum of 1.0 meter from the edge of
excavation or shall be stockpiled to the area designated by the Engineer.
2.2.2.7 For all excavation activities, adequate safety barriers, sign boards, advance warning
signs would be used.
2.2.2.8 For foundation, as soon as the excavation reaches the required depth/elevation the
surface shall be leveled and shall be compacted to 95 % of maximum dry density or
MDD.
2.2.2.9 Before the compaction starts, it shall make sure that the excavated level is free from
standing water or excessive moisture content.
2.2.2.10 Inspection would be conducted during compaction for checking and approval of
the Engineer.
2.2.2.11 Anti-termite treatment would be conducted prior to start blinding works but make
sure the anti-termite material is approved by the Engineer.
2.2.2.12 Constructing masonry and concrete works
2.2.2.13 Back filling for the first reach of the canal excluding top soil and compacting
accordingly
2.2.2.14 Replace topsoil as soon as all the spoil has been back-filled. Roll out a heavy
geotextile barrier over the soil first to prevent topsoil from mixing with gravel in the
trench. Then replace the topsoil in the trench. This will ensure fertile soil and easy re-
vegetation without having to resort to costly fertilizer
2.2.3 Concrete works
The construction methods for concrete works would be as per the standard procedure and quality
of material and workmanship specified on the contract documents.
3. Safety
3.1 All works shall comply with safety procedure or instruction as set in out in project Safety
Plan and Municipality rules and regulation.
3.2 Basic Personal Protective Equipment ( PPE ) shall be worn by all staff or laborers.
3.3 Trained operator or banks man shall be engaged to control or operate heavy equipment
machine.
