Rationale Mental health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, impacting various aspects of life,
including relationships, productivity, and personal fulfillment. This community needs
assessment aims to shed light on the various approaches and practices that individuals
can adopt to maintain and improve their mental well-being. Taking care of our mental
health is crucial, especially when it comes to navigating romantic relationships.
Relationships can have a significant impact on our overall well-being. Maintaining good
mental health amidst romantic relationships is important during the teenage and youth
years, as this period often involves intense emotions, exploration, and vulnerability.
Addressing social issues such as suicide, substance abuse, sexual activity, depression, and
social media is essential for promoting mental well-being among teenagers and young
individuals in romantic relationships.

Suicide is linked to social isolation, and fostering a supportive environment through open
communication can help prevent suicide (Motillon-Toudic et al., 2022). Substance abuse
is a prevalent concern during the teenage years, and promoting healthy coping strategies,
such as engaging in hobbies or seeking professional help, can help prevent substance
abuse.

Sexual activity can also be a significant concern, with a rise in self-exploration and
masturbation. While these behaviors often happen with mutual consent, they may be
driven by self-interest rather than being reciprocal in nature. (National Center on the
Sexual Behavior of Youth, 2019). Comprehensive sex education that emphasizes consent,
healthy communication, and safe sex can help teenagers make informed decisions and
develop healthy attitudes towards sex. It provides them with a toolkit that empowers
them to protect and advocate for themselves effectively.

Depression can significantly impact the mental health of teenagers and young individuals
in romantic relationships, and recognizing signs of depression and providing access to
mental health resources is crucial. Research has explored the influence of age,

gender, and different stages of romantic relationships on the susceptibility to mental

health issues (Price, M. et al. 2016). Encouraging digital wellness, setting healthy
boundaries for screen time, and fostering offline activities can help reduce the negative
impact of social media on mental health.

In conclusion, promoting mental health amidst romantic relationships for teenagers and
young individuals requires addressing the social issues of suicide, substance and drug
abuse, sexual activity, depression, and social media. Through open communication,
providing education, and access to professional resources, we can support their mental
well-being. Creating an environment that encourages healthy coping mechanisms,
positive peer relationships, and a balanced approach towards technology can enable
teenagers to develop strong mental resilience and maintain healthy relationships.

Objectives At the end of the activity, the participants shall:

1. Increase their awareness and understanding of mental health issues within

romantic relationships;
2. Promote open and supportive communication within romantic relationships,
focusing on their mental health; and
3. Enhance their access to mental health resources and engage in different support
networks in romantic relationships.

Strategies/ The training/seminar will be executed through brief series of interactive discussion with
Methodology subtopics relating to one's mental health during romantic relationships on adolescence.
Participants will be provided with engaging activities such as labeling emotions, group
discussions, and role playing with specific situations in connection with the topic. The
seminar will also conduct Structured Learning Experience (SLE) activity that provides a
framework in which the inductive processing skills of the youth participants can be
facilitated.

STRUCTURE LEARNING EXPERIENCE

TITLE: A Seminar in Nurturing Mental Health of the Youth while being in a Romantic Relationship
TOPIC: DECISION-MAKING
PARTICIPANTS: OUT-OF-SCHOOL-YOUTH
RATIONALE:
Romantic relationship problems are the most common reason why youth seek counseling
(Dameron & Curtis, 2020), and the dissolution of romantic relationships may be associated with a host of
issues, including but not limited to depression, academic difficulties, self-harm, and suicide attempts
(Dameron & Curtis, 2020). In line with this, some out-of-school youth may experience heartbreak and may
be able to navigate the experience without any counseling support. According to the same authors
mentioned above, the dismissal of a romantic relationship can lead to heartbreak, which is defined as the
overwhelming pain and sorrow associated with disappointment, cheating, rejection, or failure in love
(Dameron & Curtis). Moreover, emphasizing decision-making in youth serves as an investment in their
relationship journey. Implementing, “PinoYOUTH Henyo”, may allow them to consciously deal with
strategic plans throughout the duration of their bond, having to think rationally about the appropriate
solutions when things get unusual, like guessing the possible challenges that both lovers can face, making
them ready to arrive at better and well-conceived decisions for the betterment of their mental well-being.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

• To enhance youth’s cognitive decision-making abilities, including the development of critical thinking,

relationships;
• To foster emotional intelligence and self-awareness, enabling youths to recognize and manage their
emotions during the decision-making process of their relationship journey, ultimately leading to
more emotionally balanced individuals; and,
• To promote responsible and effective behavioral decision-making in youths, including the ability to
act upon decisions, exhibit self-control, and make choices that align with their challenges in romantic
relationship.
