Oral Exam for ESP 310 (Power Engineering)

Task I

I.R-U level: Give definitions to the following words and translate them into Mongolian
/5*1=5p/

1. Lignite-Хүрэн нүүрс - a soft brownish coal showing traces of plant structure,

intermediate between bituminous coal and peat.
2. fossil fuel-Чулуужсан түлш - a natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological
past from the remains of living organisms.
3. hydropower plant-Усан цахилгаан станц
4. renewables –Сэргээгдэх эрчим хүч - a natural resource or source of energy that is not
depleted by use, such as water, wind, or solar power.
5. electricity production-Цахилгаан эрчим хүчний үйлдвэрлэл - the process of generating
electric power from sources of primary energy

II. AN-AP level: Analyze the pictures below and describe the pictures in your own words

These 2
figures show the electric power system. First of all electric energy is produced at the station and
retail electric providers buy it. Retail electric providers buy transmits electricity through step-up
transformers. Electricity coming through the transmission network and step-down transformers step
down the voltage at the power substation. From here it goes through the distribution network to
customers.

III. E-C level: Answer the questions below /5*2=10p/

1. What fuels and sources are used at your company, or the companies you do business with? –Our
company uses fossil fuels.
2. Which one is used most? and Why? –in Mongolia, we mostly use fossil fuels
3. Where do the fuels come from? –fuels come from coal mines.
4. Tell me about your latest achievements.
5. What is your short-term goal?
Task II

I.R-U level: Give definitions to the following words and translate them into Mongolian
/5*1=5p/

1. solar power plant - Нарны цахилгаан станц - a facility that converts solar radiation, made up of
light, heat, and ultraviolet radiation, into electricity suitable to be supplied to homes and industries.
2. nuclear power plant - Цөмийн цахилгаан станц - Nuclear power reactors use the heat produced
during atomic fission to boil water and produce pressurized steam.
3. wind power plant - Салхийн цахилгаан станц - A wind energy power plant is a wind-energy
system that turns the wind's kinetic energy into electrical energy.
4. gas-fired power plant - Хийн түлшээр ажилладаг цахилгаан станц - Gas-fired power stations
burn natural gas to produce electricity.
5. run-of-river power plant - Голын урслгалаар ажилладаг цахилгаан станц - channels a portion
of a river through a canal and a penstock to utilize the natural decline of the river bed elevation to
produce energy.

II. AN-AP level: Analyze the pictures below and describe the pictures in your own words
Figure 1 Figure 2

1. Here we can see hydropower plants, wind power plants, and solar power plants. They
generate electricity using renewable sources.
2. This figure shows an overhead high-voltage transmission line pylon.

III. E-C level: Answer the questions below /5*2=10p/

1. Can you switch your gas or electricity supplier in your country? –no, I can not switch.
2. How easy is it to do? What would you encourage yourself to do, or prevent yourself from doing
it? – I do things like a break or grab something delicious after successful tasks to motivate myself.
3. Is it not necessary to educate people on the issue of protecting the environment? –it’s necessary to
educate people on the issue of protecting the environment.
4. How do you behave if your best friend betrays you?
5. What are your plans for the next year to improve your skills?

Task III
I.R-U level: Give definitions to the following words and translate them into Mongolian
/5*1=5p/

1. power transmission - Цахилгаан дамжуулалт - amount of heat energy transmitted by a body and
amount of heat energy incident on the body.
2. motor control - Моторын удирдлага - the process of initiating, directing, and grading purposeful
voluntary movement
3. joules-Жоуль - a unit of work or energy in the International System of Units (SI); it is equal to the
work done by a force of one newton acting through one meter.
4. power surge - Эрчим хүчний өсөлт - an unexpected, temporary increase in the current or voltage
of an electrical circuit.
5. decibel - Децибэл - a unit used to measure the intensity of a sound or the power level of an
electrical signal by comparing it with a given level on a logarithmic scale.
