PROBLEM BASED

INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN
DEVELOPMENT
BY: JOHN PAUL BARADAS
PROBLEM BASED-LEARNING & PROJECT BASED-
LEARNING
Project-based Learning: Project-based learning is a student-centered
pedagogy that emphasizes a dynamic classroom environment where
students will be able to receive deeper knowledge through active
exploration of real-world challenges and problems.
Problem-based Learning: Problem-based learning is a student-centered
pedagogy wherein students gain knowledge about a topic by working
through an open-ended problem discovered in trigger material.
GOALS OF PROBLEM BASED-LEARNING & PROJECT
BASED-LEARNING

PROBLEM BASED-LEARNING PROJECT BASED-LEARNING

1. It is intended to support students in building 1. Students’ academic achievement
a broad and flexible knowledge base, 2. Students’ understanding of the subject matter
2. Effective problem-solving abilities, 3. Students gain an understanding of related skills
3. Self-directed, and strategies

4. Lifelong learning skills, 4. Students’ positive attitudes toward learning

5. Effective collaboration abilities, and intrinsic 5. Perceived changes in work habits and other PBL
process behavior
motivation to learn.
PROCESS OF PROBLEM BASED-LEARNING
PROCESS OF PROJECT BASED-LEARNING
ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGE OF PROBLEM &
PROJECT BASED-LEARNING
Advantages
• Avoiding information overload and concentrating learning on essential knowledge
applicable to practical situations.
• Promoting the growth of important transferrable abilities that are helpful during lifelong
learning. These include problem-solving, communication, and leadership on a team.
• Enables ownership over and contro the learning process. Encouraging students to take
ownership of their own education. For medical specialists who are actively involved in
their own ongoing professional growth throughout their careers, this is a crucial talent.
ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGE OF PROBLEM &
PROJECT BASED-LEARNING
Advantages
• Enhances analytical thinking. By cententering learning on "real-life" events, learners are
more motivated to learn.
• Develops higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills. By requiring students to
interact with the information in greater depth and on more levels than in conventional
teaching methods, it encourages a deep rather than a surface-level approach to learning.
• Enables ownership over and control of the learning process. Using a constructional
approach to learning, in which students build new knowledge on top of what they already
know.
ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGE OF PROBLEM &
PROJECT BASED-LEARNING
Disadvantages
• It could be challenging for trainees to imitate effective teachers as role models because
the facilitator function has replaced the conventional teacher role.
• Instead of immediately imparting their expertise, teaching staff members are expected to
encourage learning. This might be viewed as ineffective and even demotivating to
academics.
• PBL information is less structured than knowledge learned through traditional learning.
ADVANTAGE AND DISADVANTAGE OF PROBLEM &
PROJECT BASED-LEARNING
Disadvantages
• It is challenging to train facilitators, and there are few professors that have facilitating
skills as opposed to more conventional teaching ones.
• The amount of time needed for trainees to devote to PBL. This can be particularly
difficult for trainee anesthetists or intensive care doctors practicing now or in the future.
• Time constraints for developing, implementing, and administrating PBL curricula.
EFFECTS OF PROBLEM & PROJECT BASED-
LEARNING IN SCHOOL SETTINGS
These are strategies of project-based learning which help students to experience self-directed
learning (Bagheri et al. 2013 p.19):
• The organization of learning around real-world problems
• Student-centered instruction
• Collaboration
• Teacher as facilitator
• Authenticity through the use of authentic materials and audiences
• Formative assessment
• Reflection
SIGNIFICANT EFFECTS OF PROBLEM AND PROJECT-BASED
LEARNING ON STUDENTS’ PERSONAL AND ACADEMIC LIVES

Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills

Critical thinking and problem solving is one of the eligibilities that must be accomplished to
meet the 21st Century requirements. Critical thinking refers an efficient and reliable mental
process to seek out correct answers and comprehensions about the real world. Mainly it is
about activity of analyzing ideas in a more focused direction (Sholihah and Lastariwati,
2020)

LEARNING ON STUDENTS’ PERSONAL AND ACADEMIC LIVES

Teamwork
A problem and project based learning approach engages students in team and collaborative
works, research have shown working with team in projects to find out solutions or ideas
for real world problems improves students’ social attitude toward teamwork.According to
a study by Kapp (2009), in a capstone undergraduate course about 85% of students
reported positive feedback about their team performance
ICT TOOLS USED IN PROBLEM BASED-
LEARNING
Collaborative Platforms:
Tools like Google Docs, Padlet, or Microsoft Teams allow students to work
together on projects, share ideas, and create presentations. This fosters
communication, teamwork, and facilitates knowledge sharing within a group
tackling a common problem.
Simulation and Modeling Tools:
Software like Tinkercad (for circuit design) or PhET simulations (for science
experiments) allow students to experiment in a virtual environment. This
helps them explore concepts, test solutions to problems in a safe and
controlled way, and visualize complex ideas.
Project Management Tools:
Applications like Trello or Asana enable students to organize tasks, track
progress, and manage deadlines for their PBL projects. This promotes time
management skills, task delegation within the group, and helps keep
everyone accountable for their contributions.
