ALIGATION METHODS

ALIGATION MEDIAL is used to obtain the average percent of a mixture of two or more substances of
known quantity and concentration.

1) What is the percentage strength v/v alcohol in a mixture of 3000mL of 40% alcohol, 1000mL of
60% alcohol and 1000mL of 70% alcohol?

ALLIGATION ALTERNATE is used to calculate the number of parts of two or more components of a
given strength to prepare a product of a desired strength. The technician uses the PARTS to determine
specific volumes or weights to be mixed. The desired strength lies somewhere between the available
strengths.

6) Prepare 1L of an 8% dextrose solution using 5% dextrose and 10% dextrose. How much (in mL)
of each is used

5%= 600mL 10%= 400mL

7) Use 30% alcohol and 95% alcohol to make 3 litres of 65% alcohol.
30%= 1384.62
95%=1615.38

8) In what proportions should a 20% zinc oxide ointment be mixed with white petrolatum (diluent)
