GARDEN REACH Portable Steel

Bridges have been designed on
the " Unit Construction" principle.
The basic unit of bridge is a bay
3.048 M. (10 ft.) long . Assembling
a number of bays produces
bridges of various lengths in
multiples of 3.048 M. (10 ft.) .

These bridges are constructed by

using a few basic components
which are manufactured from high (
tensile steel for lightness , economy .. \
and strength. These are illustrated
and described in the following
pages.

The system enables erection and

launching of the bridges by un
skilled labour under the super
vision of a trained engineer. No
component is heavier than 350
Kgs . and the heaviest component
can be carried by six men only .
All components are suitable for
transportation to site in commer
cial 3-tonne trucks. l)

An improved version of Portable

Steel Bridges has since been
developed by us and introduced as
MK /I Garden Reach Portable
Steel Bridges. Dual carriageway / Inside view of the standard timber decked mUlti-span bridge
Doub!e Lane bridges have also shown on the cover page. Timb er wearing surface laid
been developed. across the timber chesses has been used on this bridge.

The engineers of GRSE are at your

service without obligation for
advice and for furnishing a most
economical design to solve your
bridging problem.

PART- A
GRSE PORTABLE STEEL BRIDGES

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The design of this bridge has been developed from the original Bailey
Bridges designed dur,i ng the Second World War.
J
Single Single
bd · bSingle Single Reinforced

The bridge is of the "through" type, the roadway being carried between
two main girders . The main girder is formed from steel panels of welded
construction 3048 mm. (10-ft.) long X 1448 mm. (4-ft. 9 in) high between
pin holes, each panel being pin jointed to its neighbour end to end . The

~~
load carrying capacity of the girder can be increased by adding extra panElls
alongside and on top of the original panels. The different arrangements
of panels are known as trusses and storeys; a girder made up of three
panels alongside each other and none on top is known as "triple truss ,
single storey" while a girder made up of two panels alongside each other
and one set of two on top is known as "double truss, double storey" .
JJ
Double Single Double Single Reinforced
JlL
The bridge is described according to the number of trusses and storeys
which form its main girders. In all cases the number of trusses is given
first followed by the number of storeys. "Single Single" is the lightest
combination possible and "Triple Triple" is the heaviest. "Single Double"

ru
and "Single Triple" truss form unstable structure and must never

~
be used. There are, therefore, seven possible combination of girders e.g.
Single Single, Double Single, Triple Single, Double Double, Triple Double,
Double Triple and Triple Triple. These are also recognised by the abbre
viations-SS, DS, TS, TT etc.

With the exception of Double Triple and Triple Triple, the various cons Triple Single
Ul 1M Triple Single Reinforced
tructions stated above can be reinforced by the addition of Chord Rein
forcements to the top and bottom of each truss. Reinfdrced construction
is symbolized by the addition of the letter "R" for example, Double Single
Reinforced-DSR.

All the above constructions of the bridge girders are shown herewith .

The girders are connected crosswise by transoms. These are long RSJs
which rest on the bottom chord of the panels, and carry the roadway
super structure. They are tied to the panel chords by transom clamps and
fix the trusses in position at the required distances apart. The girders are
also connected by two diagonal braces called Sway Braces, at each panel
bay. Across the transoms run the roadbearers , which for ease of cons
truction have been welded togehter in groups of three , to form stringers

and are 3048 mm. (10-ft) long, the same length as a panel bay. Running
across the stringers are placed the wooden chesses which form the deck
of the bridge. Ribands are provided to guide traffic and to hold down the
ecking with the help of riband bolts .
i
When required, Footwalks for pedestrian tarffic, 762 mm. (2 ft. 6 in .)
wide, may be provided either on one side or on both sides of the bridge.
These fit outside the main girders of the bridge and are carried on foot
walk bearers which are secured to the ends of the transoms. Posts, which
fit into sockets at the end of footwalk bearers are also supplied for providing
railing to the footwalks with cordages passing through loops on the posts
foot-walk.
(
End Posts, Male & Female, are provided for connecting to the female
and male lugs at the ends of the panels of each truss of the bridge for dis \
I
tributing the shear forces due to the end re-action of the bridge. The i
end posts attached to the ends of each truss of bridge girder are supported
on bearings which rest over base plates placed on the ground at each end 1
of the span. The base plates are intended to spread the load from the
bearings evenly over an area of ground .

The height of the timber deck of the standard bridge is 673 mm. (2 ft.
2.1/2 in.) over the bottom of base plates at each end of the span. Ramps
can be provided to give ease of access to the deck of the bridge. Ramr:s ~I It p t.

may be supplied in lengths of 3048 mm. (10ft.) or 6096 mm . (20 ft.) as
required according to the contour of the approach road. These are made Triple Double Triple Double Reinforced
of three RSJs welded irto a frame. Ramps are fixed at the ends in precisely
at the same manner as the stringer and are 3048 mm. (10 ft.) long. For a
6096 mm. (20 ft.) ramp, two spans of ramps must be used, supported at
the junction on ar intermediate transom, carried on four Ramp Pedestals.

bridge span exceeds the safe bearing pressure of the soil of river bank,

it will be necessary to provide a grillage to spread the load over a larger
area. Different types of standard grillages composed of steel and timber
components are available and these can also be supplied when required. .

The arrangements of the basic components of a double truss single storey

chord reinforced construction of the bridge is shown in Fig. 2 .

DESCRIPTION OF
STANDARD BRIDGE COMPONENTS

GSB 1 MK II PANEL

The panel is the basic bridge member, constructed from high tensile
structural steel channels with all welded joints.

The chords at top and bottom of the Pan el terminate at one end in a male
lug and the other at a female lug. These male and female lugs enable
the Panels to be connected end to end with Panel Pins.

Holes in the top and bottom chords take chord bolts to connect Panels
together and to chord reinforcements forming multiple storey and/or chord
reinforced trusses.

Four transom seatings are provided on the bottom chord, which also has
two slots into which Sway Braces are pinned.

In both chords and end verticals, holes are provided for fixing Bracing
Frames. The top holes in the end verticals are used for fitting the Rakers
or Tie Plates. All Verticals have a slot above the transom seat to take
Transom Clamps.

The Panel is 3048 mm (10ft.) long and 1448 mm. (4 ft. 9 in.) high
between pin hole centres.

Weight 283 Kg

BS 2 BRACING FRAME

\ A Bracing Frame is a light mild steel welded frame with a hollow conical
dowel at each corner. It is used to brace together panels in multiple truss
and storey construction of bridge girders at the following positions

(i) In a multiple truss single storey bridge, horizontally across the centre
of the top chords of the panels.

(ii) In double storey bridges, in a similar position, horizontally across

the top chords of the panels, and- additionally, in a vertical position across
the rear verticals of second storey panels

(iii) In double storey bridges, vertically across the front end verticals of the
second storey panels in the first bay at the head end . of the bridge.

A Bracing Frame is 1244.6 mm (4 ft. 1 in.) long and 457.2 mm. (1 ft.
6 in.) wide between centres of dowel holes.

Weight 18 Kg

BB 3 RAKER

The Raker is made from high tensile Channel. It connects the end of
the Transom to the top of the inner truss and gives the truss lateral stability. i
Hollow conical dowels are fitted at each end , which serve to draw the
Panels into correct alignment by engaging the holes in the Panel and
Tran som. One Raker is used on each side of the bridge at every Panel
junction point. It is fastened by means of the Bracing Bolt.

BS 4 PANEL PIN

PANEL piN is used to connect panels together and is made from special
alloy steel of high yield strength and electro- zin c plated to resist rust. The
panel pin is inserted through holes in the male and female lugs in the
panels and secured by Part No. BS 4a SAFETY piN (Split Pin) .

The panel pin is 2,11 mm (85/16 " in.) long overall .

This provides diagonal bracing on the underside of the bridge and is I

connected to opposite ends of the two inner Panels in a bay. Two are I. J
used in each 3.05 M. (10 ft) bay. A Sway brace consists of a mild steel {
rod hinged at the centre , with an eye and a pin retained by a chain at each
end for connecting the Panel.
,(
An adjustable tum-buckle is included, whkh can be rotated by the ta lil
of an erection podger spanner. The Sway Brace is correctly tensioned "I
when both ends of the rod are against the sliding block gauge; a lock
nut is incorporated.

BB 19 BEARING

This spreads the load of the bridge to the base Plate. It is a welded
steel assembly carrying a round bar upon which the half round bearing
of the End Post rests. This bar is divided into three lengths by two· stiffeners.
In the single truss bridge the End Post is arranged to bear on the centre \
length ; in the double truss bridge, two Bearings are used , so that each l.
truss rests on the centre length of each Bearing; in the triple truss bridge
the inner truss bears as before but the outer trusses bear on the two outer
positions of the second Bearing . Thus it is never necessary to use more
than two bearings at each end of each main girder for any bridge.

Its overall dimensions are 4·57 mm. (1 ft. 6 in.) long. 381 mm (1 ft.
3 in.) wide and (3 13/16") high from bottom of base plate to top of the
round bar.

GBB 31 BAse PLATE

The Baseplate is designed to spread the load from the bearings evenly f
over an area of ground. It is a welded steel assembly of which the centre r
forms a sun.ken platform to take the Bearings. One Baseplate is suffi··
cient for one corner of the Bridge, whether the construction is of a single,
double or triple truss, but the bearing pressure on the gmund must be
checked

Certain numbers (1, 2 and 3) will be found embossed on the edges of the
Baseplates. These indicate the correct position for the centre line of the
inner truss of single, double and triple truss bridges respectively and by
aligning the appropriate number nearest the decking with the inner truss,
the correct transverse position for the Baseplate is found for each type of
bridge.

The Bearing can move 2.29 mm. (9 in.) longitudinally on the Baseplate.
For bridges on fixed supports, this movement is largely to assist in erection
and also allows for expans1ion of the bridge.

The baseplate is 1400 mm (4'-7") long. 900 mm (2'-11 f' ) wide. 62

88-59 ROCKING ROLLER I
For launching long spans, severe local bending stresses occur in the
bottom chord at the point where it passes over the bank seat roller. Rocking
Rollers distributes th e.. load over a I~nger length .

It is a fabricated balanced beam, housing in it three rollers with half

round bearing at the bottom centre, which fits over and is free to rock on
Bearing . Depending on the launching weight of the bridge, number of
Rocking Rollers required is to be worked out. Side Rollers are provided
on each side to act as guides for trusses. which can be removed if necessary.

Weight 91.60 Kg

88 -18 JACK SHOE

Jack shoe is a fabricated base for Jack. It is placed on the base plate
within the space available after placing bearing. It allows limited movement \
of bearing in jacked up position of bridge. s6 that beadng can be correctly (
located under the end posts before lowering .

BRIDGING CRIBS

Where small piers are required the 20' ton Bridging Crib can be used.
This Crib is constructed from angle and flat and will carry 5 Tons on all
"Panel " poi nts . The Crib is 6 ft. X 2 ft. X 2 ft . (1 .83 M X 0'.61 M XO .61 M)
and can be used vertically or horizontally. When it is used verticlly it will
carry 20' tons (4 X 5 tons) and horizontally it will carry 40' tons (8 X 5 tons) .

The Cribs are built up in " brick" formation to give cribs in 2 ft. (0'.61 M)
increments.

The Sill Clip allows the Crib to be fastened to timber or concrete

BB 68 MALE JUNCTION POST

BB 69 FEMALE JUNCTION POST

(
At the junction of two spans of a broken span brli dge end reaction is
transmitted to the foundation through these specially designed end posts. (
Male and Female junction posts correspond to Male and Female end posts
respectively. At the top additional panel p in hole on extend lug and at
the bottom universal jaws also with panel pin holes depending on type
Q male or female are provided . The extra Panel Pin holes at the top of male
and female position are locked by Launching LINK (BB 65) and Panel
Pin BB 4, for launching purpose, thereby making the broken spans con
Q tinous to roll freely on launching ,rollers . After launching a special com
ponent called Junction Link BB 70 is pinned at the bottom part, connecting
male and female posts for transmission of end reaction to foundation
through crib bearing beam.

Transom seat is provided in each part inside a rectangular opening .

I
Hence transom clamp or raker can not be fitted . Junction posts can (
accommodate change lin slope between adjacent span up to 1 : 6.7 up
wards to 1 : 5 downward but this may be restricted to a lower value by
the junction chesses .

GRSE PORTABLE SUSPENSION BRIDGES
GENERAL DESCRIPTION Cable Parts :

Standard Portable Steel Bridge components alongwith certain Special Twelve Cables, six on each side of the bridge in horizontal layer, are
Components can be utlised to build Suspension Bridges from 61 Meters to used . A set of six cables pass over saddles, fixed on the top of the Tower.
122 Meters span. For load carrying capacity refer Table-R. They are individually connected to anchorages via adjusting screws and
special grabs. End of the cables are not cut to exact length but extra
This type of bridges are suitable for hilly terrains where intermediate length is utilised for adjustment through adjtJsting screws with special
pier is not possible as in deep rivers. Normal Traffic load being low in quick acting grabs for each cable.
< such places the restricted load carrying capacity usually is sufficient.
Two cable curves 'A' & '18' are used, the 'A' curve is for span 91 .5 meters
In the Himalayan mountains a number of GRSE Suspension Bridges are to 122 meters and 'B' curve is for span 85.4 M span. see F'ig. 24 & 25
already in use.
For cable curve 'A', 20 nos . Suspenders, 10 nos. on each half span, are
used on each side of bridge. Suspender No . 1 to 4 from mid span to each

, Cable curve'S' has 14 nos. Suspenders, 7 nos. on each half-spa!",
A General layout and elevation of a typical GRSE suspension Bridge
is shown in figure . General specifications & Technical details are given arranged in simi liar manner as in curve 'A' All these are adjustable.

Suspension Bridges have 4 general sub-groups of parts namely

Tower Parts :
\" Each leg of Towers are made of standard Panels joined together to form
(a) Span Parts Double-Single (OS) Construction. Legs are connected by Cross Gilders
(b) Cable parts which are made of Panels also. Towers are made of Panels also. Towers
(c) Tower Parts are 15.3 M , 12.2 M or 9.1 M in nominal height depending on the span,
to ach ieve the required cable curve .
(d) Anchorage Parts
Rocker Bearings are placed under each leg and saddles for rope are

struction (SSR) is also used. Most vital parts of the bridge are the anchorage parts. Tension per
cable at anchorage in about 19.3 Tonnes, totalling to about 116 Tonnes/
Special suspenders are bolted to the top-chord. End Posts are not anchorage, in case of 122 M span Bridge. Since ground conditions will

INSPECTION, TESTING. PRESERVATION, MAINTENANCE
(I
INSPECTION & TESTING

The main structural component, the Panel, is proof load tested in the
factory in excess of the rated capacity in bending and shear. Soundness
of the main welding on male & female eye lugs of a certain percentage
of the panels are also checked by X'Ray . The panel is then gauged and
inspected to ensure that the distances between pin holes and the pin-hole
diameter fall within the very fine tolerances imposed. All other compo
nents are also inspected and gauged where necessary to ensure that all
tolerances are maintained and similar components are completely inter
changeable.

PRESERVATION

All panel pins and bolts & nuts are electro-zinc plated to a coating
thickness of 0.025 mm. minimum followed by chromate passivation to
ensure long life in extreme service conditions .
<
All other steel components are sand-blasted to remove rust and mill
scale thoroughly. These are then phosphatised by dipping in a tank
containing the solution at an elevated temperature. The work is then
rinsed in cold running water. This is followed by a final rinse in hot water
containing a suitable chemical to counteract any alkaline material present
in rinse water and to assist drying. The components are then dried and
without any loss of time given a coat of priming paint . These are then
given 2 coats of finishing paint to specific customer requirement .

When so desired by the Purchaser for a longer-life finishing process, Testing of two panels at a time for proof load
the components may be supplied with hot-dip ga'i vanising finish.

MAINTENANCE
