Teaching Date & Time: May 21, 2024; 1:00-2:30 pm Quarter: 4th

I. OBJECTIVES
a. Content Standards The learners demonstrate an understanding of uniformly accelerated motion, motion in two dimensions using projectile
motion as an example.
b. Performance Standards The learners shall be able to propose ways to enhance sports related to projectile motion
c. Learning Competencies The learners should be able to…
1. describe the horizontal and vertical motions of a projectile;
2. investigate the relationship between the angle of release and the height and range of the projectile;
d. Specific Objective At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
a. Discuss uniformly accelerated motion in the vertical dimension.
b. Relate the motion of a freely falling body to motion with constant acceleration.
c. Solve problems using kinematics equation for free fall or UAM (vertical dimension).
II. CONTENT
FORCES AND MOTION

C. Materials Television/projector, laptop, whiteboard, marker, books, coin, ball, paper, scientific calculator

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Elicit The teacher will recall the previous lesson on Uniform Accelerated Motion equations, variables, and their units.
B. Engage Is it possible for a feather and a bowling ball to hit the ground at the same rate of time?

The teacher will show a short YouTube video of Brian Cox visits the world’s biggest vacuum | Human Universe – BBC
C. Explore The teacher will show a sample of a free-fall demonstration using a book and a ball with different masses together with
the help of the students.
1. Which book hits the ground first?
2. Which ball hits the ground first?
3. How come both objects with different masses hit the ground at the same rate of time?
D. Explain Process the outputs by discussing the concept and equations used to describe free fall or uniformly accelerated motion in
vertical dimension.

“Free-fall” motion is a Uniformly Accelerated Motion that takes place in a vertical direction. Anytime an object moves
vertically, either going upwards, or going downwards, we say it is in free -fall.

There are two key, critical concepts that we must understand when discussing objects in Free -fall motion:
1. The constant acceleration of the object is ALWAYS directed downwards due to the influence of Earth’s gravity; the
acceleration due to gravity on Earth is referred to as “g”, and has a value of 9.8 m/s2. Because of sign conventions, where
we choose up to be the positive direction and down to be the negative, we will say that, in Free-fall, the vertical acceleration
of an object is -g = -9.8 m/s2.
[Recall: the negative sign indicates that the direction of the acceleration is downwards.]

2. When an object is in free-fall, we will always ignore any effects that air resistance may have on the object’s motion.

Kinematics Equation for Free-fall

Vf = Vi + gt Vf2 = Vi2 + 2gh

d = Vi t + 1/2gt2 h = (Vf – Vi/2)(t)
E. Elaborate Uptown Chuck is riding the Giant Drop at Great America. If Upton free falls for 2.60 seconds, what will be his final
velocity and how far will he fall?
Given: g = -9.8m/s2 t = 2.60s Vi = 0m/s
Find: d = ?, Vf = ?

d = Vi t + 1/2gt2 Vf = Vi + gt
d = (0m/s)(2.60s)+(0.5)(-9.8m/s2 )(2.60s)2 Vf = (0m/s) + (-9.8m/s2 )(2.60s)
d = - 33.1m Vf = - 25.5 m/s
F. Evaluate A stone is dropped into a deep well and is heard to hit the water 3.41 seconds after being dropped. Determine the depth
of the well.
Given: g = -9.8m/s2 t = 3.41s Vi = 0m/s
Find: d = ?

d = Vi t + 1/2gt2
d = (0m/s)(3.41s)+(0.5)(-9.8m/s2 )(3.41s)2
d = 0 m + (-4.9)(11.63)
d = -57.0 m
G. Extend Maria throws the ball straight up with an initial velocity of 5m/s.
1. What is its velocity at the highest point?
2. What is its acceleration at the highest point?
3. What is its velocity when it returns to the elevation from where it was thrown?
4. What is its acceleration just before it hits the ground?
5. After 2 seconds, what is the acceleration of the ball?
