1. Experiment No: 07
2. Experiment Name: Study of voltage regulation of a single-phase transformer with
inductive load.
3. Objectives:
• To determine the voltage regulation of a single-phase transformer under varying
inductive load conditions.
• To analyze the impact of inductive loading on the transformer’s secondary voltage
and overall performance.
4. Learning Outcomes:
Upon completing this experiment, we will be able to:
i. Understand the concept of voltage regulation in transformers.
ii. Measure and calculate voltage regulation under inductive loading.
iii. Interpret the effects of inductive loads on transformer performance.
5. Theory:
Voltage regulation in transformers refers to the change in secondary voltage from no-load
to full-load conditions, expressed as a percentage of the no-load voltage. It is a critical
parameter indicating the transformer’s ability to maintain a constant output voltage
under varying load conditions. The percentage voltage regulation is calculated using the
formula:
Vno-load − Vfull-load
%Voltage Regulation = × 100%
Vfull-load
Under inductive loading (lagging power factor), the secondary voltage tends to drop due
to the phase difference between voltage and current, leading to positive voltage regulation.
6. Apparatus:
Sl No Apparatus Name Range Quantity
1 Single-phase transformer 380 VA 1
2 Variable AC supply 270 V 1
3 AC Voltmeter (0–300) V 1
4 Inductive load — 1
5 Connecting wires As required —
7. Circuit Diagram:

Figure 1: Circuit diagram for voltage regulation experiment with inductive load
8. Procedure:
1. Connected the primary of the transformer to the AC power supply.
2. Connected the secondary side to a variable inductive load.
3. Attached the voltmeter appropriately and ensured all connections were tight and
safe.
4. Switched on the power supply and measured and recorded the no-load voltage on
the secondary side.
5. Gradually applied inductive load and at each load level recorded the secondary
voltage.
6. Calculated the voltage regulation at each load using the provided formula.
9. Data Table:
V2 (No-load) V2 (Loaded) % Regulation
80.53 80.29 0.29
80.53 80.25 0.35
80.53 80.15 0.47
80.53 80.06 0.59
80.53 80.23 0.37
10. Reports:
1. Voltage regulation increased with the inductive load due to higher reactive power
causing greater voltage drops.
2. The transformer exhibited positive voltage regulation under inductive loading con-
ditions.
3. The observed data aligns with theoretical expectations, confirming the impact of
inductive load on transformer performance.
