ABSTRACT
Influences of pile foundations and their nearby soil conditions were
neglected when performing a traditional structure analyses for most large
span steel box-girder bridges. Therefore the effects from varying soil
strengths on structure behaviors for large span steel box-girder bridges
cannot be investigated actually.
The author of this thesis applied the SAP2000 finite element program
to form an entire structure modal, including pile foundations and their nearby
soils, for a large span steel box-girder bridge across Shi-Ba-Chong Stream.
Then influences of different soil conditions on 3D dynamic behaviors of
large span steel box-girder bridge were investigated. Results from this study
support the following two conclusions:
(1) By comparing the frequency for each mode, it is clearly vivid that the
stiffness for a whole structure of a large span steel box-girder bridge
tends to be the same when values of SPT-N for soils are suitably high.
(2) When concerning a large span steel box-girder bridge, results from a 3D
dynamic analysis show that the maximum relative displacement at the top
between each two nearby piers is greater than the width of an expansion joint.
Such that collision between each two steel box-girder bridges on both sides
of an expansion joint will occur during the period for the attacking of an
earthquake
