Most of the important socializers in our lives fall
into five major categories:
1. Family
2. Peer Groups
3. Media
4. School
5. Workplace
Agents of Socialization
Family
In the first few years of the childs life, the parents
serve as the mirror in which the child begins to see
his self and the source of ideas about what is
important.
It is from the parents that children first learn the
values and behaviours.
It reflects the attitude, values and customs of the
social class, religion and region of which it is a part.
Agents of Socialization
Peer Groups
It refers to the groups whose members are more or less of
the same age, sex and rank.
According to K. Davis (1949) peers stand in the same relation
to persons in authority and therefore see the world through
the same eyes
Through their friends, children gain insight into other
persons feelings; they learn how to handle intimacy and how
to find ways to achieve mutual understanding.
Children learn the meaning of exchange and cooperation
through their friends.
Agents of Socialization

Media
Children spend more time watching television
than they do in school or in direct
communication with their parents.
It can affect their values and behaviour,
positively or negatively depending on the
television show that they are watching.
Agents of Socialization

School
The purpose of the school is to teach young
people the technical and intellectual skills
through the curriculum to prepare them for
positions in the workplace.
The school prepares the children to adapt into
the larger society or the real world.
Agents of Socialization

Workplace
At the workplace, a person meets people of
different age groups and belonging to
different social and cultural back grounds.
The workplace also helps a person to widen
his/her perspective in terms of social
acceptance and tolerance towards the others.
