Science:

Light and Shadow

Class IV
18th April 2018
We see shadows of plants, animals and
other objects on a sunny day.
If an opaque object is placed in the path of
the light, light cannot pass through it.
The rays are stopped from going to the
other side of the opaque objects and the
space behind the object does not receive any
light from the source.
The space behind the opaque object where light
cannot reach is called a shadow.
Thus, shadows are produced when light is
stopped by opaque objects. Therefore, shadows
are formed because light travels in a straight
line.
Shadow will not be formed if there is light
coming from different sources in different
directions.
Test yourself
1. How does the light travel?
Answer: Light travels in a straight line.

2. You can hear a television programme in the other room but cannot see it. Why?
Answer: Because the light rays are blocked as they can only travel in straight line and cannot bend.
3. When do you see your shadow?
Answer: We see our body shadow when the light from the source of the light is blocked by our body.
 Shadow will not be formed if there is light coming
from different sources in different directions.
4. Why are you not able to see the Sun on a cloudy day?
Answer: Because the light coming from the Sun is
blocked by the clouds.
5. What is the shape of a shadow?
Answer: The shape of the shadow is the shape of the
object blocking the light.
