 Terminology

 Origin:
Origin is the location where a trip begins.It described in terms of a stress
address,monument,a street intersection or a district.

 Destination
It’s the location where a trip ends.It tributes same as the trip origin.

 Origin-Destination
It describes both ends of a single trip.this is abbreviated to O-D Survey.
 Definition

 O-D SURVEY:
 Origin and destination survey provide a detailed picture of travel patterns
and travel choice of a city’s or region’s resident.

 These survey collect valuable data related to households,individual trips.

 It can be used with other information to help transport planners to


understand the needs of an area and develop appropriate transport
solutions.
 Objectives

 To determine the amount of by passable traffic that enters a


town, thus establish the need for a bypass.
 To develop a trip generation and trip distribution models in the
transportation planning process.
 To determine the extent to which present highway system is
adequate and to plan new facilities.
 To assess the adequacy of parking facilities and to plan for
future.
 Use of O-D survey

 To judge the adequacy of existing routes.


 To establish preferential routes for various catagories of
vehicles.
 To locate expressway.
 To regulate movement of Heavy vehicles.
 To locate New Bridge as per traffic demands.
 To locate parking palace.
 Methods of O-D Survey

a) Roadside interview survey.


b) Home interviews survey.
c) Telephone survey.
d) Taxi survey.
e) Post card questionnaire survey.
f) Registration number survey.
g) Tag survey.
h) Public Transport survey.
i) Commercial vehical survey.
 Road side interview survey

 In this method interview stations are previously decided


on the roadway.
 The vehicles are stopped at the interview stations by a
group of persons and the answer to be prescribed
questionnaire are collected on the spot.

Information to be collected:
 Place and time of origin.
 Place and time of destination.
 Route .
 Purpose of the trip.
 Type of vehicle.
 Number of passenger in each vehicle.

Advantage:
 Data is collected quickly in a short duration.
 Field organization is simple.

 Disadvantage:
 The vehicle are stopped for interview for interview
and there is a delay to the vehicular movement.
