URBAN TRANSPORTATION

City level stakeholders’ consultation workshop.

Surat Municipal Corporation
Surat, Gujarat
Surat and its transportation
planning
 Surat is a vibrant economic center in
Gujarat on Ahmedabad - Mumbai
regional corridor having a command
over the business activities in the region.
 The city has witnessed high population
growth, rapid economic development,
and concomitant increase in freight and
passenger traffic over the last two
decades.
 With population approaching 3 million as
indicated by census 2001, growth rate is

 Labor intensive industry dominates, with
diamond, textile and chemical industry
employing a large number of migrant

KRIBHCO, NTPC, Shell, Reliance, etc.
make the city nationally important.
 The sustenance of Surat’s growth would
only be possible with the development of
an efficient transportation system. The
urban transport scenario is sought to be
guided by the Comprehensive Mobility
Plan, 2007 to achieve sustainable and
efficient transport system in Surat
