MOTTO OF THE PROJECT
 GENERATION OF DIFFERENT LEVELS OF VOLTAGES
USING MODULAR MULTILEVEL CONVERTERS,
 PROVIDING A PRECISE OUTPUT CURRENT CONTROL
USING CURRENT CONTROL LOOP.
INTRODUCTION
• In order to meet the increasing energy demands , photo-voltaic (PV)
systems came into existence.
• In a grid-connected PV system, control objectives are met by pulse width
modulation (PWM) scheme.Based on two cascaded control loops ,the
outer voltage control loop (to settle the PV array at the MPP) and an inner
current control loop (to establish the duty ratio for the generation of a
sinusoidal output current) which is in phase with the grid voltage.
CASCADED BUCK
CONVERTER
• The figure (a) represents the circuit of cascaded
four level buck converter.
• It is built from the series connection of the HB
converters in the low voltage side.
• The output voltage would be twice the input
voltage per number of series modules connected
in the circuit.
• As can be seen in figure, the inductor is split into
several smaller inductors ,but the total amount of
energy stored in all inductors is same as for the
unique converter with total voltage rating.
CASCADED BOOST
CONVERTER
• The cascaded boost converter can be seen in figure(b).

• The inductance value used in case of CBt is half the value

of that used in CBk converter in order to maintain same

inductor current ripple.

• For maintaining constant power level inductor current

level must be doubled.

• In boost converter , during the discharge process the

average inductor current will become twice when the

power level at dc bus is maintained constant compared

with buck converter.

MODULAR MULTILEVEL
DC/DC CONVERTER
• The modular multilevel converter consists of a single
inductor for whole converter and employed in HVDC
systems

• Several modulation strategies such as PWM ,SPWM,

phase modulation techniques are existing for the
control of the converter operation.

• Multiple modules are useful for multiple input and

output voltage and current levels, switching
frequencies.

• In this topology, redundancy in combination with hot

swap capability of modules can be achieved.
PROJECT SIMULATION CIRCUIT
EXPECTED OUTPUTS
ADVANTAGES
• Different voltage levels can be achieved from this type of
converter.
• Energy management is easy.
• Current control is possible through PI controller.
• Amount of regenerative energy stored can be used
according to our various demand requirements.
APPLICATIONS
• Many electric traction applications such as elevators and railways.
• Mostly used in applications such as UPS ,photo voltaic plants where high power levels
are required during a short period of time from milli -seconds to few hundred seconds.

• It is a good trade off between complexity and reliability.

• Redundancy and controllability.
• Higher performance due to reduced inductor size for same inductor current ripple.
FUTURE SCOPE
• Energy sources are depleting in a large scale now-a-days. The day to day
requirement for the energy demand is hiking in a faster pace.
• In this regard, the usage of regenerated energy would be quite helpful for
meeting the crisis/energy demands.
• “Energy can neither be created nor be destroyed, but can be converted from
one form to another”.
• Using the regenerative energy in certain applications such as trams, elevators
and in many other mobility applications can save energy.
