STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE

FOR
HEMM MAINTENANCE
SOP FOR HEMM MAINTENANCE
1. Always wear well-fitting helmet, safety shoes and
proper working clothes. While drilling, grinding or
hammering, always wear protective goggles.
2. While working with others, always choose a group
leader and work according to his instructions. Do not
perform any maintenance beyond the agreed work.
3. During maintenance, do not allow any unauthorized
person to stand near the machine.
4. When machine is required to be inspected for the
repairs, first park the machine on a flat place safely and
stop the engine for inspecting and repairing. Also place
a ‘Tag’ properly on the machine i.e. “Machine is not
operational”. Also remove ignition key as an additional
precautionary measure.
SOP FOR HEMM MAINTENANCE
5. Extreme care shall be taken when required to work
underneath; be sure before start of work that proper safety
supports are placed like wooden logs or steel structural
supports below the machine. Do not depend on the
hydraulic cylinders to hold up the equipment and the
attachment.
6. When required to check the coolant or water level in the
radiator, do not remove the radiator cap from hot engine.
Always, open the cap after the engine cools down below
50˚ C (122˚F) to prevent burn injury to working person from
heated coolant spray or steam.
7. Before draining of oil from the Engine or Hydraulic Tank,
always allow it to cool down to ambient temperature.
8. There is always danger of fire from fuel and oil. Always
store the same in cool and dry area and away from any
open flames.
SOP FOR HEMM MAINTENANCE
9. Fuel or oil is hazardous/dangerous substances. Never
handle fuel, oil, grease or oily clothes in places where
there is any fire of flame. As a precaution in case of
fire, always know the location and direction for use of
fire extinguisher and other fire-fighting equipment.
10. While checking the machine immediately after running
condition, due care is to be taken not to touch exhaust
pipe or turbo charger; as they are very hot and may
cause burn or injury to the person.
11. Do not open the engine hood and covers while the
engine is running.
12. Exhaust gas is dangerous when working inside, be
particularly careful to have good ventilation.
SOP FOR HEMM MAINTENANCE
13. Unless you have special instruction to the contrary,
maintenance should always be carried out with the engine
stopped. If maintenance is carried out with the engine
running, there must be two men present one sitting in the
operator seat and the other one performing the
maintenance. In such a case, never touch any moving part.
14. Be careful of not hitting the edges of the Engine Hood
when you work for inspection or service of engine in hood
open condition. Make sure that the hood is arrested
properly to hold at its place not hitting on the head of the
working person and at the same time person has to be
alert for not allowing his head or any body parts hitting
due to sudden and careless movement.
SOP FOR HEMM MAINTENANCE
15. While working on the HEMM, be careful that the
Engine or Pump house or cabin door may suddenly
close and may injure the working person. Be sure to
support stay when the side door needs to be opened;
and be careful that the open side door may get
closed by the external or natural force like strong wind
also.
16. On any machine if any oil or grease found on the floor
of the operator’s cabin or on the Hand-rail; remove
and clean immediately as there is a danger for slipping
when maintenance person/operator is moving on the
machine.
SOP FOR HEMM MAINTENANCE
17. Be very careful while walking on the excavator or
dumper. Make sure that the anti-slip protection is
placed there. If they have become worn or have been
printed over, ensure that it is free of oil, water and
grease.
18. Where there is high pressure gas container fitted on
the machine, always mark the Caution board “Contain
High Pressure Gas”. To avoid explosion and personal
injury, do not expose it to fire and do not drill. Relieve
pressure before discharging. Awareness regarding
identification of different types of gas cylinder among
maintenance staff to be ensured.
SOP FOR HEMM MAINTENANCE
19. While lifting of very heavy components, make sure that
slings (steel wire ropes) are sturdier and capable of
taking the load of the components to be lifted.
20. Do not handle electrical equipment while wearing wet
gloves or in wet places, as this causes electric shock.
21. While working on hydraulic circuit, always remember
that the hydraulic oil circuit is under high pressure.
Make sure to release the hydraulic pressure before
feeding/draining the oil or carrying out the inspection
and maintenance. The procedure for releasing the
hydraulic pressure for example is as follows: lower the
blade and ripper to the ground, and stop the engine;
move the control lever to each position two or three
times and then slowly loosen the oil filler cap.
SOP FOR HEMM MAINTENANCE
22. Flame should never be used instead of lamps. Never
use a naked flame to check leaks or levels of oil, fuel,
or electrolyte.
23. While checking an open gear case or any rotating part,
there is a risk of dropping things in it. Empty everything
from your pockets before removing the covers to
inspect such rotating parts.
24. Be extra careful while removing the tracks; be sure
your fingers does not gets caught between the shoes.
25. When handling the cutting edges, always wear gloves.
SOP FOR HEMM MAINTENANCE
26. When inspecting or servicing a battery, be sure to stop
the engine and turn the ignition switch to (OFF)
position.
27. While performing any service to the battery besides
checking the electrolyte level or measuring the specific
gravity, disconnect cables from the battery.
28. While boosting of any battery with the help of any
battery of the HEMM, ensure that proper boosting
cable of adequate insulation is used with correct
polarity of the batteries.
