habit or other gross physiological characteristics. It can
be categorized as being succulent (herbaceous) or
woody.
• Herbs – self-supporting stems
• Vine – requires a upright growth may be a
climbing or trailing plant
• Shrubs – more or less upright stems and smaller
than tree
• Tree – a single central axis and taller than shrubs
• Deciduous – are leafless
plants during a portion of
the year
• Evergreens – may lose
their leaves annually but
not until a new set of
leaves has developed.
Another classification of plants is based on life span

and divides plants into three:
• Annual plant – one that normally completes its
entire life cycle during a single growing season.
eg. Lettuce and Spinach
• Biennial plant – normally completes its life cycle
during a period of two growing seasons
eg. Carrots and Celery
• Perennial plant – grows year after year , often
taking many years to mature.
eg. Asparagus and Raspberry
Another classification of plants is based on

temperature tolerance and divides plants into two:
• Tender plants – killed by freezing temperature
• Hardy plants – survive freezing
Horticultural plants are classified into three:
