The document discusses wind energy potential and development in the Philippines. It notes that the Philippines has the largest wind power production in Southeast Asia, with over 33 MW currently installed. A study identified over 10,000 sq km of land with good wind resources that could support up to 76,600 MW of installed capacity. Several locations around the country experience strong winds and have potential for wind farms. There are currently several wind farm projects under development by private companies, utilizing technologies from countries like Denmark and the US. The government supports wind energy through site identification, project assistance, and technology transfers from Japan.

WILSON P. ORO JASPER LLANETA ROYCE VINCE NAZ Wind Energy in the Philippines
The Philippines is the top wind power producer
in Southeast Asia having 33 MW wind turbines in Bangui, Ilocos Norte that started operation in 2005. A study by the US National Renewable Ener gy Laboratory (US NREL) shows that there are 10 ,000 sq. km. of land areas in six regions with good-to-excellent wind resources. These windy a reas can support a potential installed capacity of 76,600 MW. Advantages The Philippines’ potential for wind energy is attri buted to its many good wind sites due to its location in the Asia-Pacific monsoon belt. Its potential wind power seems sizable compared with other power producing countries like Germany, Spain, US, Denmark, and India. Wind power density is at 500 W/m2. US NREL – DOE study shows that out of the 73 provin ces in the Philippines 47 have at least 500 MW wind p otential and 25 have at least 1,000 MW. Ideal Location The following locations were identified in the US NREL study to have a potential wind electricity capacity of 76,600 MW over an area of 10 ,000 km² (see Figure 1):
1. Batanes and Babuyan Island
2. Northwest tip of Luzon (Ilocos Norte) 3. Higher interior terrain of Luzon, Mindoro, Samar, Leyte, Panay, Negr os, Cebu, Palawan, Eastern Mindanao and adjacent islands 4. Well-exposed east-facing coastal locations from Northern Luzon south ward to Samar 5. The wind corridors between Luzon and Mindoro (including Lubang Islan d) 6. The wind corridors between Mindoro and Panay (including the Semirara & Cuyo Island) Investment Opportunities • North Wind Power Development Corporation (33 MW) in Bangui Bay, Ilocos Norte • There are 6 wind farm projects under development: - PNOC-EDC 140 MW in Ilocos - UPC Asia (100 MW) - Energy Logics (40-60 MW) - Energy Development Corp. and Isolux-Corsan (a Spanish engineering, construction, concessions and services and real estate development group) (10-15 MW) - PetroEnergy Resources Corp. (30 MW) - Phil Carbon (30 MW) • The wind farms in the Philippines get their technologies from large producers of power generators and wind pumps in Denmark, US, Spain, and China GOVERNMENT SUPPORT
