CHAPTER 13

The Second Novel:

El Filibusterismo
The Second Novel:El Filibusterismo

 Jose Rizal started writing the second novel

as early as October 1887 while he was still
in Calamba. He continued writing when he
was in London, more chapters are written
when he was in Paris, Madrid and Biarritz
where the manuscript was completed on
March 29, 1891. It took him three years to
write the novel.
The Second Novel:El Filibusterismo

Jose Ma. Basa forwarded his passage
money but he postponed his trip because he
wanted the novel to be published first. He
transferred to Ghent with Jose Alejandro to
find a cheaper printing press and residence
in three months.
The Second Novel:El Filibusterismo

He looked for the printing press that would
give him the lowest quotation in publishing the El
Filibusterismo. Aside from staying in a cheap
boarding house, Jose Alejandro and Jose Rizal
decided not to take the breakfast offered to further
economize. Jose Rizal pawned his jewelry and gave
all his money from the sales of the Noli Me Tangere
and the annotation of the Sucesos de las Islas
Filipinas in order to fulfill the down payment for
the printing of El Filibusterismo.
The Second Novel:El Filibusterismo

He expected the patriotic Filipino to help
him in the publishing expenses but his friend
did not send their promised support. In this
dismal moments, he wanted to throw the
manuscript and suspend its publication but like
the Noli, help came late. Valentin Ventura, his
friend in Paris sent to Jose the needed amount
for the completion of the publication of the El
Filibusterismo.
The Second Novel:El Filibusterismo

On September 18, 1891, the second novel
came off the press. He sent two copies to Hong
Kong, one for Jose Basa and the other for Sixto
Lopez, the original manuscript was given to
Valentin Ventura with his autograph, and
complementary copies were given to Ferdinand
Blumentritt, Graciano Lopez Jaena, Trinidad
Pardo de Tavera, to the brothers Juan and Antonio
Luna, to Marcelo H. Del Pilar, and others.
The Second Novel:El Filibusterismo

The book was dedicated to the memory of
the three Filipino secular priests who died
martyrs to the cause, the GOMBURZA. The
second novel is said to be the continuation of
Noli Me Tangere since it had the same major
characters but it started thirteen years after the
soldiers believed that they shot Crisostomo
Ibarra dead in river chase.
The Second Novel:El Filibusterismo

Reactions to the book were varied. There were
congratulations from many friends, others called it
perfect, others compared him to Alexander Dumas,
Graciano Lopez Jaena found the El Filibusterismo
superior to the Noli Me Tangere in terms of style and
ideas but M. H. Del Pilar found the Fili inferior to the
Noli as a novel. Whatever the choices of the readers, this
novel, however, sealed the fate of Jose Rizal. The
political leadership in the Philippines saw him as an
enemy of the state. Even his countrymen warned Jose
Rizal not to return to the country.
