WORKSHOP PRACTICES LAB

B.TECH FIRST YEAR

How is an engineering workshop useful for B.Tech students?

• The skills that we learn in the workshop are supposed to help us

doing things our self when the need arises.
• lets take an example, say you are a engineer and you are working
on your battery powered vehicle which is supposed to be the
solution for the climate change problem we are facing.
• And in the middle of your prototype design you are supposed to
make a unique type of screw which is required to finish your
scaled model, on which you are going to do fluid dynamic studies
in a wind tunnel.
• ok, does the example seems imaginative which is not practical?
Absolute NO! that's the minimum you do for a Tesla type battery
powered vehicle.
• The scaled model may require you to make the
aerodynamic profile on a wooden piece, which is why
you learn carpentry in your workshop.
• The unique screw which you need to make requires a
working knowledge of lathe machine.
• And yes, you can always find people to do what you
want. but, the energy spent running around finding
people who can do things for you requires a lot more
energy than doing yourself, given that you are trained
to do so.

FITTING SHOP
• The term Fitting is related to the
assembly of parts, after bringing the
dimension or shape to the required size
or form, in order to secure the
necessary fit. The operations required
for the same are usually carried out on a
workbench, hence the work is done on
the bench is called Fitting work.

BLACKSMITHY SHOP
OR FORGING SHOP
• Smithy or Forging is the oldest shaping process
used for the producing small articles for which
accuracy in size is not so important. The parts
are shaped by heating them in an open fire or
hearth by the blacksmith and shaping them
through applying compressive forces using a
hammer.

MACHINE SHOP
Machine shop
• A machine shop is a room, building, or company where
machining is done, which is a form of subtractive
manufacturing. In a machine shop, machinists use
machine tools and cutting tools to make parts, usually of metal
or plastic (but sometimes of other materials such as glass or
wood).
• A machine shop can be a small business (such as a job shop) or
a portion of a factory, whether a toolroom or a production area
for manufacturing. The parts produced can be the end product
of the factory, to be sold to customers in the machine industry,
the car industry, the aircraft industry, or others. In other cases,
companies in those fields have their own machine shops.
• The shop where most of the work performed on different
machines are called machine shop. In the machine shop, the
raw material is cut, machined, formed or shared with the help
of a machine. Different machines used in the machine shops.

MIRACLES OF ENGINEERING
1. Channel Tunnel
It is also known as Chunnel and is an underground tunnel that is 32 miles long. It connects United
Kingdom with northern France The deepest point is 246 ft. deep..
 CN Tower
It is located in downtown Toronto, Canada and is considered to
be the tallest freestanding structure in the world. It measures in
at a height of 1,815 ft and is used as a communications tower
and an observation desk.
The Burj Khalifa (Arabic: ‫ برج خليفة‬, Arabic for "Khalifa Tower";
pronounced English: /ˈbɜːrdʒ kəˈliːfə/), known as the Burj Dubai prior to its
inauguration in 2010, is a skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. With a
total height of 829.8 m
Golden Gate Bridge The bridge connects Marion County to the northern tip
of San Francisco. It has a total span length of 1.7 miles. The bridge sports 6
lanes and a width of 90 feet. The tallest point on the bridge is about 746
feet tall.
Statue of unity
600 FEET( 182 METRES)
• L&T employed over 3000 workers and 250 engineers in the
statue's construction. The core of the statue utilised 210,000
cubic metres (7,400,000 cu ft) of cement concrete, 6500
tonnes of structural steel, and 18500 tonnes of reinforced
steel.
• The outer façade is made up of 1700 tonnes of bronze plates
and 1850 tonnes of bronze cladding which in turn comprise
565 macro and 6000 micro panels.
• The bronze panels were cast in Jiangxi Tongqing Metal
Handicrafts Co. Ltd (the TQ Art foundry) in China as suitable
facilities were unavailable in India.[23][24][6]
• The bronze panels were transported over sea and then by
road to the workshop near the construction site where they
were assembled.( source wikipedia)
